Palmer 4 Rivenburg . of, New York! v ' Btrawberries, "10 to 12; asparaprus 3 tot i: cidbii"P, fl.P1 to Jt.63; pis ! ' 'i?lr I'M':. , IMPORTANT SURVEYING INFOBMi TION. The Magnetic Nced'e Changing its Course -A Lack of Knowledge on Tkis Point May Cause Endless Annoyance About Boun dary Lines. Our attention has been calledjby Mr.H. J. Lovick to the fact set forth in reports sent out from Washiu "ton by the Govern mcnt that the magnetic needle is slowly but surely changing the direction in which it points and instead of pointing due north is pointing further to the west with each passing year and is now over two degrees removed from the true north and south line. This secular change is a matter impor tant for nil surveyors to understand and to keep accurately posted on in all its latest developments in order to avoid mistakes in their work. This is so well shown in Gillespies land surveying by an example accompanied by a degree show ing the errors that would be made in run ning oft" an irregular shaped field that we quote from the remarks there made: "Suppose that a surveyor, ignorant or neglect ful of this change should attempt to run out a farm by the old bearings of the deed, none of the old fences or cor ners remaining. It would be of the same size and shape as the true one but it would be in the wrong place. None of the lines would agree with the true one and in some places it would encroach on one neighbor and in other places would leave a gore which belongs to it, between itself and another neighbor. Yet (Aw is often done and is the source ot a great part of the litigation among farmers res pecting their lines." Of course the bare statement of the present secular variation ol the magnetic declination would answer all practical purposes, but as a matter of interesting information we publish the changes Tor New Berne and the points of which it is the chief place as they have progressed since 1850: In 1850, instead of being on the true north line the needle pointed .17 of a de grees eat of it. Five years later it had changed so that it was, 14 of a degree teett of the true line, in 1800 it was .46 of a degree west, in 1885 .79, in 1870 1.11, in 1875 1 43, in 1880 1.72, hi 1885 2.01, a id 1H90 2.27 degrees. The government report also contains the prediction that in 1895, the variation will be 2.5 and in 19000 2.7 dqgrees. From these figures given surveyors Lo!ck and Brown com pute the present vaiiation at 2.1 degrees. There is no reason why any surveyor or any one specially interested m surveying should not inform himself and keep thoroughly posted on these changes for the department semis the information out freely. Any one who writes to F. C. Menden- ball, Supt. U. S. Coast and Geodetic Sur vey for it will receive a pamphlet con taining tabulated statements of the changes through the United Slates aud also at some foreign ports. Ordering Lumber by the MlP'on. The schooner Lizzie James now loading with lumber at the whaif of the Stimson Lumber Company for Ilobt. R. Sizer & Co. of New York has been chartered for the entire season to run between New York and New Berne. The 11 -m ubove mentioned have con tracted with the Sfnnson Lumber Com pany for three million feet to be delivered this year and Lhm have orders from other parties for several million feet tnoio and expecttosellscvci.il millions besides as the demand arises through the season for The J. S. Kent Company of Philadel phia have several vessels chartered for the year taking lumber from this mill for themselves aid the number is likely to be inceas'Hl for when it comes to a pass that sales are being made by the million feel it takes considerable transportation facilities to meet the requirments. The couipa iy is now doing the largest bus! ncjs it has ever done. A New Berne Schooner Wrecked.
