Strong Condemnation.
A moss meeting of the citizens of Den
mark bitterly denounced those who had
criticized their action in lynching John
Peterson, suspected of having committed
rape.
Tho following is the share of editor
Gonzales, of the State: "Third. That we
condemn the editorials of N. 6. Gonzales
who, for political purposes, has siezed
upon this occasion and the punishment of
Peterson for a pretext to vent his hostil
ity to Governor Tillman that we espec
ially condemn his editorial in which he
by covert words seeks to excite negro
men to atttck and rape white women
when unprotected as Ijeing unworthy of
the pen of a pure journalist, am) emena
ting only from the heart of one blacker
than the wretch who assaulted Miss Bax
ter deserving the same fate as John Peterson."
The Outlook for Potatoes.
The potato crop, one ol the most re
liable stand-bys, is coming on finely and
in a short time digging will begin.
Some neighborhoods rather think they
are ahead of us on this crop, but it is a
mistake. New Berne truckers have
learned not to push an Immature crop on
tlic market; while carliness is a prominent
point it must not be gained at the ex
pense of proper condition. This is ini
tial to the highest success. The de
ceived reputation of sending first class
stock is not to le lightly esteemed for the
kind that goes from each trucking locali
ty is remembered by the buyers from one
year to another and justly influences the
prices.
