Oliver who has been attending the fire insurance meeting, held last week in Washington City, tells us that the rep resentatives ofthej different companies wore rather downcast, their losses having been enornous during the last year. SALEM FEMALE ACADEMY. Large Attendance at Commencement- Twenty Graduates -Reception -Art Exhibit. Special to The Journal. Salem, May 80. Tonight was seniors second evening of Salem Academy com mencement. A large crowd is remain ing. Twenty young ladies are graduating. The class road essays of high order, and several fine selections of music were beautifully rendered. Following the exercises was the recep tion to the graduating class an:l friends of the school. It was largely attended. Ice cream and cake refreshments were served and it was a most enjoyuble occasion. The art exhibit in the academy chapel this afternoon was hrrgely attended by very appreciative visitors. There are many line paintings, crayons and other works of art. The exhibit evidences rent proficiency in the pupils and in many instances they showed much native t ilent. There are oil paintings of the first five Presidents of the academy finely executed by the students. The class re union takes place at 10 a. in. in the morning. Superior Court. Is it Worth the While 1 One of our citizens, who, a little over two years ago moved here from another state, expresses Btrong delight at the ut terances of our late editorial visitors, and warmly favors that they be utilzed to the city's advantage, by having appropriate selections from them put in pamphelt form for gratuitously sending abroad. A small sum of fifty cents or a dollar from each business man weuld be suffic ient to have quite a number printed and placed. He says that he himself since coming here has repeatedly had inquires as to the opportunity the place affords, and that if he had such a pamphlet to mail it would be more effective, coming as it does from visitors than anything he or others identified with the place could say. We place these thoughts be fore our people and let them decide as to whether they wish any steps taken in the matter or not. Coming and Going. Miss Cyntie Rountree, who has been visiting her brother, Mr. W. F. Rountree lelt for home in Grifton accompanied by his niece, Miss Mattie Rountree on a visit. Miss Mary L. Allen returned last night from Raleigh where she has been attend ing the meeting of Peace Institute alumni. Mr. Frank Scheelky returned from Winston where he has been on a business trip. Mr. T. H. Sutton is back from spend ing a short time at Seven Springs. He informs us there Is now a very good num ler of guest at the hotel for so early in the season and satisfaction is sxpressed at the building of the pavilion and other improvements. The Newport of the South. The Morehead City News says: "We hove been informed there will be near 1,800 soldiers that will go In camp this summer. Mr. Raid Whitford of the U. S. Government came down this week and surveyed the grounds, and everything is in readiness for the lumber.
