One ol Assistant Secretary Bussey's amazing pension rulings, which will probably be reversed with as little loss of time as pos sible, is that a dishonorable disobarga of a soldier from the service was no bar to his claim for penpion. H. Forty-three cars of truck was the amount it bad and the cars were load ed chock-a-block. There were in all 13,000 packages (3000 more than on the previous day) about 10,000 ol these were barrels of potatoes. Potatoes are selling now at $11.00 to $4.00 per barrel. Estimating at the lowest figures $3.00; it will I be seen that the railroad by itself, to say nothing of the steamer shipments, handled $30,000 worth of potatoes in one day, not to mention the other truck. New Berne, May 95th, 1893. - - The Commercial and Industrial Asso ciation of N C. At the meeting of the State Press As sociation held at New Berne last April Mr. Alf. A. Thompson, President of the Commercial and Industrial Association, addressed that body on mutters relative the developmcut of the State. As was asily to be expected, the Press gave him full attention, and the immediate action the Press Association was such as to eatly encourage him and the entire Commercial and Industrial Association in making further attempts to develop every resource of the State through organized effort. The matters toward which the Associa tion first directed its efforts were: The repeal of the Merchant's Purchase Tax, Slate Banking System, and a Uniform Insurance Law. The work of the Association during last year and through the last Legislature 'suited in a radical modification of the Purchase Tax; the passage of a Stale Banking Law (drawn by Colonel Burg- wyn, ol Henderson), which the New- York Journal of Commerce pronounced the best one ever passed Oy any Slate, and such reform of the Insurance Law as was most needed. The matters before the Associaliou now e: The State at the World's Fair; the improvement of Public Roads, Municipal Ownership of (Ins, Electric and Water- plants, to the end that cheap lights, power and water may be furnished to nil manufacturing industries; Diversification f Crops, ami the Encouragement of lm- migration of a Proper Class. To deal with these matters properly. the Association want the advice and co- peration of the business element and talent of everv tow n in the State. Twenty-four towns now have member ship iu the Association, vi.: Beaufort, Carthage, Clayton, Greensboro, Hender son, Kinston, LaOrange Morehead City, New Heme, Penello, Raleigh, Burling ton, Aberdeen, Salisbury, Wilson, Wind sor, Nashville, Pittsboro, Sylva, Tarboro, W'avnesville, Winston and Holly Springs. The association can be made a power ful factor in leveling our State and in se curing abiding benefits for nil sections of Every village, town and city should be represented. Let each one form local organizations and send representatives to the State meeting wheh it comes otf. It is desired to arrange for a granil meeting of the association to be held earlv i" Inly. Any place may secure proper represen tation in this meeting by the election of delegates from its Board of Trade, or tin appointment of representatives by the Mayor of towns in w hich there may be no commercial or business organization or in anv other way each town may deem proper.
