Congressman Reed has been nominated in caucus on the Republican side for Speaker of the House and Con gressman Crisp on the Democratic side. Cleveland got back to Washington Saturday. Mr. C. B. Spencer who niovid his grain and feed stere in one of Messrs. Watson & Daniel's new stores at the market dock last week, was getting in new supplies yesterday and is making a pretty good show. This is the first of these stores to be occupied. Work is in progress on some ot the others still. A now publication, "Poultry Talk,1 has made its appearance at Atlanta, Ga. It is edited by J. H. Daves and contains a notice of our Winter Exposition. If Mr. Daves wishes to see the best yet held of these popular Fairs, we invite him to be present at the next one to be held about six months from now. A few of those who intend to be at tha pony penning Thursday are already going down. Among those who passed through last night for the double purpose of at tending the penning and enjoying the sea breezes were Mr. Chas. Benbow of Greensboro and Maj. J. W. Dowd, superintendent of one division of the Black well Durham Tobacco factory and Mr. L. D. Killett of Wilton. Prof. G. T. Adams who got back to New Berno last night expects to take in tbe penning also. .. A Handsome Monument From New Berne; - - -v-v-vy.. : ! , Mr. S. K. Willis has just erected in tbe cemetery at Kinston tbe ' handsomest private monument in Lenoir county and one of tbe handsomest that ever went from the East Carolina Works of this city. It h to the memory of Mrs. R. B, Bountree. yyy -:y The monument is of granite and is sur mounted by a lovely, life-like and .life size marble figure of Hope; this figure was carved in Italy. He arrived on last night's train to spend a few days in New Berne. He is tho guest of Mr. J A. Meadows. Misses Ridio May and Lula Taylor who have been visiting at Kinston, re turned home. Mr. Luther Taylor also returned home from a short visit at Kinston. The Pony Penning. To morrow is tho time to leave for Morehead if you arc going to t lie pony penning so that you will have an early start by boat the next morning ami take in all the sport, fun and excitement. If you live in New Berne the railroad fair will be only $1.25 lor the round trip; from Kinston it is only $1.00; from Oolds- boro only $2.50 and from all other stations the same low rates in proportion hold good. The tickets will be good to return un til and including next Monday. Either train the Shoo Fly or the regular may be usecl. Ihc penning will be at the middle pen. This is on Core Banks As the penning has lieen advertised it is proposed to put forth special efforts to get an unusually largo number ul tiie ponies up. This is the best opportunity to see a good penniug that has occurred for years and there is no telling when as convenient a one will offer itself again. th. the Close of the District Conference All who were at Uritton speak of meetings as very delightful. Both Sunday scliool ana district conlcrcnccs were largely attended, and the preach ing was of a very high order. Saturdayjwas made an educational day, and three addresses in behalf of that cause were delivered. The first address was by Dr. F. L. Reid, the new presi dent of Greensboro Female College; the second by D. L. W. Crawford, Prof, of Bible Literature, Trinity College; und the third by Dr. J. F. Crowell, President of the latter college. They were all ex ceptionally fine. Dr. L. L. Nash, pastor of Filth street Methodist church Wilmington, also made an address in behalf of that church, and a small amount of money was raised tor it. i Very fine sermons wore preached at the Sabbath service. The one . in the morning was by Dr. Crawford, the one at night by Dr. Nash. On account of the rain the Missionary meeting planned for the afternoon was not held A Death-Dealing Lightning Bolt. Lightning has been extraordinarily fatal in this State this summer. A most singu lar case and one that was most dreadful in its effects comes from near Bentonville. Johnson county. In a two-roomed house Mr. and Mrs. John Holley were lying on a bed asleep. Seated on the floor in four feet of them was their little girl, while in a chair six feet away sat Mr. Holley's mother. A bolt of lightning struck a hollow oak tree, passed down the hollow, came up out of the ground at the root of the tree, struck a sill of the bouse, tore up part of the floor, instantly killed Mr. and Mrs. Holley on the bed, tearing half of the man's clothing but not even bruising him; set Are to tbe girl's clothing and stunned her, stunned old Mrs. Holley; passed into the other rooms and stunned Mr. and Mrs. KeeUj kliled a dog in a doorway and a number of chickens under the house. It is thought the girl will die. Kinston College. Dr. R. H. Lewis has resumed the presidency of Kinston College.
