Company and Mutual Baseball Team
will come, over the new railroad from
Wilmington to the Oriental Fair. Also
two pugilists will come and give ex
hibitions on the grounds. Prospects
indicate a large attendance.
We fell in today with one of the New
Berne boys whom we have only seen oc
cassional for several years E. M. Wom-
ble. After moving about somewhat
promlscously, a year or so ago he
got a position on the Cape Charles light
ship as engineer. He came up this morn
ing on the Plymouth for a months vaca
tion. He now has a line physique and
an avordupoise of two hundred pounds
less perhaps two or three.
Especially did we desire to chronicle
the advent of some baby. We always
thought the "birth column" such an in
teresting feature that wo would have
made a new departure for this paper if
the item could have been found. It is so
nice and convenient to let the friends
know, and all the world beside, that
another little cherub has flown over the
wall and found a warm place in your
home and heart.
In keeping with the above we submit

Honor to a New Berne Poultry Breeder.
New Berne is fast gaining a national
reputation for fancy poultry. Mr. Hugh
D. Wood, of Wood Eros., proprietors of
Hivcr View Poultry Yards, has just re
ceived ollicial notification from Atlanta.
Georgia, oMiis election as one of the vico
presiiUnts o" the great Southern Poultry
Association. The selection of Vr. Wood
for the above position is quite an honor
to tbe poultry breeders in ami around
New Borne, the movo so to Mr. Wood i s
it was entirely unexpected by him. ami it
is a well-earned recognition of the dis
tinction the firm' is attaining by the x
ccllence of the birds they are supplying
to other fanciers over the uuion and by
the high ( lass exhibits they arc repeatedly
making at fairs.
The next meeting of tho Southern
Poultry Association -will be held in At
lanta from January 0th to 13th, 1394.

World's Wonder Beans.
One of our subscribers has sent to our
office a conple ofpods about a foot long
of the World's Wonder beans, each con
taining 'about a dozen large white seed.
The seed wort sent from New York to
test their adaptability to our soil and
climate and they prove all right. It is a
running beau and will reach a height of
18 or 20 feet, bearing largo purple blos
soms. t
" When cultivated well the pods reach i
length of 18 inches and are tilled closely
with the beans. .Both pods and seeds
are edible: when cooked- together they
resemble - in flavor "cabbage" or salad
peas; when the seed are cooked separately
