IE JOURNAL. A lard Tnm Cot. Harreil. K1LEI0H. 2J. a, Aof.84. Tha violence and persistenoa of t6 attacks made ca me, &y certain r artiea in the State. is my exeou tor making this plais statement of fi ts, Btcn I reapeetfullj uk tbe prs to copy. There were two ground of. com plaint la regard to my management 1. Some member of the party failed to aecara sleeping ear and other accomodation on tb note. This wm dne U the fact that a large camber of parties joined the party on the day of departure, without previous notice, thns ewevlling its number beyond my power to pro vide necessary Boomoaauons. n was perhaps an error to permit them to join without notioe, and I frankly confess it. . 2. 1 had received money in ad Tanoe to pay bills in Chicago for members of the party, oat, on reach log Chicago, I was nnable to pay these bills, because I bad deposited tbe rand in banks in Raleigh and . Newbern to be drawn, as certified checks, while in Chicago as needed. To my surprise neither my checks or those of others were accepted ia Chicago, owing to the financial stringency, and I then asked the parties who had paid me to advance money for their bills nntil I coald get earrenoy from JEUleigh in the hottest possible time, wnicn tney did. As fast as possible, I have re fanked all these advances and every member of tbe party is re paid, except a few persons whom 1 have not yet heard irom. It has required time to ascertain the amounts due each one, and I have been very busy with a great variety of work connected with mv official duties and my ordinary affairs. This statement will, I bone, ex plain tbe matter to people who are willing to do justice. Like all men who serve the pubiio, 1 have some enemies and rivals who have gladly seize dthis opportunity to distort my eondact. and slander my char aoter. They are deriving evident satisfaction from their own malici one performance, and I assaretbem they are welcome to enjes their dir ty occupation, h.
