' ' Prompt Settlement. Our townsman, Mr. C. C. Green, died on the 18th of August ..He was a member of tbe Royal Arcanum. The papers for proof of death to obtain the amount of pokey were forwarded on tbe second ol September and on Saturday the 16th of September, the widow was paid the $3,000 by Mr. W. F. Rountree, the treasurer of the council. This insurance cost Mr. Green a little less than $200, which makes a very good investment ' He had belonged ' to, tbe Acanum since August 19tb, 1887, a pe riod ot hsU ' years. -.The ?ttew Berne council now numbers 107 members. - A two year old child of Cas. Fisher, col., died Friday night from the effeets of a draught' of concentrated lye which drank a day or two previously. Its mother had the lye in a mug from which the child was accustomed to' drink, and sitting it down she turned to look attar the stove and while her back war; tamed the child picked . the mug Up and took tbe fatal drink.: H:W;;s(,y A fearful scene has been' discovered at Port Royal, S. C. The bodies of twenty- six sailor and one woman washed up on the beach evidently the victims of some wreck. -: No information whatever has jt been received as to the indentity of the foundered ship. The steamship ' A vo ol the Atlas line from, has been- long overdue, but. the owners are still confi dent of her safctys 4; . Rev. D. H, Petree has presented tb Joubjjai, office with a portion of a. corn stalk which ho brought from Stokes county. ) It was raised by the . father of Mr.- Petroe and it is , unquestionably a grown stalk. "It measures eight' and quarter inches around and it grew pro portionately high. Some -- of tbe stalks reached a height of twenty four feet, and they bear- large full years of corn. One ol our printers says tho stalk w .' .1 make anice base ball bat, but we Bera'ar Trains aa tke Hew Kaa4. .The steamer Blanche made her last trip ia connection with the W. N. A N R, R. yesterday. Hancock who is engaged in taking the city census is now at work in the fifth ward aud it wilt be completed in day or two more. The first fonr wards show inhabitants as follows: 1st Wsrd 651; 9od Ward 906; 8d Ward 899; 4th Ward 1,994 a total of 8,751. The o umbering oi the houses on Mid dle street is now flnifbed and the work as progressed on Craven street from rent river to beyond Broad street. oinin? and (Join;. Mrs. Philip Thomas left yesterday mor.,in" lo visit relatives at Carey and friends ut Durham. Mrs. Otelia Barrow who baa been visi- cing her mother in law, Mrs. A. E. Bur gess, left, returning to her home in Dur- a n. Mr. Geo. Allen arrived last night to Bpeml a short time in tho city. Mr. R. II. Ikrry returned from an in surance business trip. Misr Katie Matthews who has been away visiting mends and relatives at several places returned home last night. Satisfied With Her Road Investment The Herald speaking of how the tax system of working roads pans out says : The nrst year oi the new road law in Rowan county is rounded up. During that time there has been paid to the treasurer a total ot 2.748.89 for special road tax, and the roads have cost 83,719.15 leaving a balance in the treas ury of 23.71. No money that tho county has ever expended has been used for a better purpose than that pat on the public roads. People may grumble at the expense when road improvements are proposed and possibly kick while the work is in progress but when they once get the im provements, few indeed could be found who would be willing to go back to the olu ways. This can bs verified in the city of New Berne as far as our perma nent street improvements have been flu shed and it will be the lase in the country whenever a system of road-making and working is established that will bring the publio road up to the standard that ought to be maintained. People who use bad roads ought to pro test against them in a veryjsuitable way and on every proper occasion until some way is devised by which they will become a thing of the past. Resolutions of Respect. Whereas the Almighty Father in his infinite wisdom has permitted I the angel ot death to invade our council and remove from us our beloved C. C. Green therefore be it Resolved by Trent Council No. 411, Royal Arcanum, that whilo we bow in submission to tbe Divine decree, we de plore tbe loss of one endeared to us by fraternal ties which could not be severed without deep regret.
