Cntler has oommeneed the erection of another building on Bern street adjoining the one now occupied by Capt Geo. U. Crapon, The handsome residence of Mr, R. C Eebo on New street is nearly completad and a good start is being male on the one oppo site Mr. a M. Cooper Mr. T. J. Turners new dwelling on Han cock street adjoining his residence thoegh not so large as the latter will be quite a pretty place when finished. Capt Dave. Styron. is putting up a good dwelling on South Front street just above the Macadamise road. The dwelling house which Capt J. J. Lassiter is erecting at Union Point Jit about ready for occupancy. It is a neat little place. This and the larger near by on East Front being built by City Marshal Lew'u to take the place of his old one The addition recently made to Mr. D. G. Smawa. residence and the repainting of the residence of Mr. W. B. Ellis, and some other recent improvements near taken altogether add considerable to the neigh bor hood. The work of remodelling Gaston House has gome fsr enough to show to every observer sccquainted with the place before the work was commenced that it will be about the same as a new building. Four wide and deep stores front the street. They extend farther back than the old building did and above them a number of new rooms have been added Where two small grooms were adjoining they have been changed into one large and desirable one but the new rooms added are sufficiently numerous to make the entire number larger than before any changes were made. The new dining room on the second floor is commodious and pleasant The exterior of the hotel is handsomely painted in century style and the interior will be finished artisti cally making the hotel a very desirable resort for the regular travelling public or other sojourners in our city. Finishing touches are being put on the commodious and handsome depot of the W. N. & N. R. R. The offices are likely to be moved over to it next week from tho building temporarily occupied. Jew Berniang and Wilmington's Wel come Week Our city is now billed at some of the most public places with posters adver tising the msnifold attractions of Wil mington Welcome Week, Dec. 5th to 9th, during which time a new programme will be given daily consisting of magnifi cent displays of fireworks, sham naval and military battles, civil, military and business parades, loot ball and base ball games, bicyele races, a merchants free ex cursion to Ocean View and an oyster roast and clam bake there, &c. This will beyond doubt be an interest ing occasion and we look for a good num ber of our citizens to participate in the gathering. Heretofore the lack of direct communication has been somewhat of a bar between the two cities but now thst the W. N. & N. R. R. is completed be tween the two cities we look for a largely increased attendance from each at great public occasions of the other. The railroads will give greatly reduced rates for Welcome Week and the occasion will be a good starter for the exchange of courtesies between the two cities. Change ef Schedule and Quicker Time. A alight change Of schedule went into effect on the W. N. A N. R. R. Monday, (see time table No. 8 in another column.) , The leaving time of the passenger train from New Berne remains the same,8 a.m.; the leaving time of the freight train is now 8 p. m. instead of 8:10 p. m.; the passenger train jirrives at 8:80 p. m. in stead of 8 p. m, as heretofore. The leaving time of the passisnger train from Wilmington is unchanged, but the time made is- twenty minutes quicker than the former schedule the trip being made in three hours. ' " . Burgess died at her home on Metcalf street at 4:45 Monday morning after an illness of several weeks, aged 87 years. , The deceased was a good old lady and a faithful member of Centenary M. E. D., pastor of the Church of the Strangers, New York City, died at bis home there Saturday night, at five minutes to ten o'clock, sged 78 years. - Throughout the South, Dr. Deems wss one of the best known clergymen of the country cspecislly so in North Carolina. Dr. Deems was born in Battimore but spent twenty-five years of his life in North Carolina. He came here as an agent of the American Bible Society when 20 years of age. In 1881 be was pastor of this (New Berne district end previous to that time he waa for some years pastor of Centen ary M. E. Church this city. He visited Eunp- uml Palestine twice. He ws the suthor of about a dozen relig ious works the best known being his cx ocllenfLife of Je:n.'' As a pulpit orator Dr. Deems was hard to equal, and he would often startle his audience with the enunciation of thoughts that the subject would Dot suggest to the average mind, it taking a giant intellect like his to fathom, arrange and promulgate them. Dr. Deems also did considerable relig ious editoria lwork and was zeulons in behalf of education. Ho was for a while President of Greensboro Female College, N. C, and later of Rutgus college, N. Y. Fine Work or the New Berne Co leglate Institute. Dr. John S. Long President of the Bosrd of Trustees of the New Berne Academy has paid a number of visits to the New Berne Collegiate Institute with the special purpose of looking into the school and seeing what its merits were, and he speaks in glowing terms f the work that is being done. Among other things be tells us of s :lass ol twelve in Latin tbit he saw pass ing an examination yesterday. Out of ta ) number four received 100 and four an average of 90, leaving only four out or the whole class to fall below 90 an excep tionally fine piece of class work. Dr. Long unbesitatingand strongly as serts after careful investigation that the school work, though slow and unpreten tious, is first-class, and that Prof. Hodges is making thorough scholars out of the pupils who attend, and that as our peo ple realize they will take hold of the school and best that has ever been in the city. Dr. Long is satisfied the school is bound to grow upon its substantial mcr its. Dangerous Preparations.
