TILE JOURNAL. Admiral Mello ku left the harbor ot Bio Janeiro, sailing sonth. ud. It eo$. the city of Philadelphia three thooMid dollar to tend t delegation to Culeag t bring btck loo Liberty bell. A 8ea Antonio dispatch saj Chinee nre being smuggled across the Bio Grand coming from Booth Mexico. "ThVeieter la not right," re marked, the editor, u be handed the poet hi rejected manuscript. "Look here,1' joo forget where yon re 700 ain't talkin' to no gas , company." The Booth Carolina Legislature baa elected an aaaoeUte jostice of the Bopreme Oonrt and seven cir cuit jodgea. Every one of the men elected ia a reformer or Tillman Democrat. The new tariff bill is meeting with the endorsement of praotic ally the entire Democratic press of the country- Even the sore head are compelled to acknowl edge tbat it is squarely in Hot with tbo platform. Jerrr ShnDeon eoes back to Washington discouraged at the ac tion of the people oi Kansas in the recent election. Jerry's ooactita ent remain in Kansas disgusted at their Representative's antics io Congress. A raw-hide gnn is the latest in vention In the gun line. It is a steel tube bound with raw-hide ropes, whioh are cemented together and wrapped closely with steel wire. It to said to be stronger than the steel gna of the same dimensions, and baa the great advantage of being much lighter and therefore more easily moved and handled. The official comparative state ment of the receipts and expendi tures of the United States, issued by the Treasury, Bhowsthat the re ceipts from customs have declined for the first five months of the cur rent fiscal year as compared with the corresponding mouths of the last fiscal year, $24,000,000 and lor the same period payment on ac- eouot of pensions has decreased $6,000,000. HATTERAS SETTLEMENT. AsItlg Supposed to be and as it Really Is The People and their Occupations. Hatteras is known the world ov er for its terrors, yet tbero is little known of it otherwise, if I must judge from my own information, previous to a visit to that place a lew weeks ago. Heretofore in hearing Hatteras referred to as a settlement, I have always classed it in my owu mind as ether portions of the banks or sea coast which I was acquainted with, hence I was greatly mistaken when I arrived at Hatteras to find a thrifty, industrious and very in telligent people, and also to find them engaged in many pursuits of industry, though the greater part fishing, seining and shipping fish, and also found them well equipped for this business. I am informed that on tbo inside the greater part of the fish are ought by pound net.-; on the out side, that is at sea, the fish are caoght by nets sunk in from sixteen fathoms of water. In consequence of toe rough seas encountered crossing the "bar'' this is sometimes perilous, and my opinion wonld be impassable with boats fonnd anywhere else on the coast or without. The boat they have here is es pecially adapted to this business, or in other words designed and built especially for rough water. Capt. Ira Stowe, being the original designer and builder of this class of boat which for speed and buoy ancy nnder sail we don't think are excelled in the United States. They have also quite a number of nice little schooners for convey ing their fish, packed in ice, to Elizabeth City, from which place they ship them to Northern mark eta and returning brings ice to their toe booses. The people I find very kind and hospitable; every house is a home for the stranger. There are two churches there and two schools, now in session, five retail stores well stocked with goods, and all seem to be doing a profitable business. Last bnt not least to be mention ed ia the fair sex, of whom I mast say that I have never visited any place where there was such a large parentage of handsome ladies, especially the yonng ladies they are not only pretty in face and figure, bat for grace, .refinement and inteligenoe are second to none in any country place in North Car olina or ia any other part of the World we have ever visited. - E.
