Adolph Goldsmith committed suicide in Selma on Tuesday night oy taking caustic soda, or iodide ol potash. Mr. Goldsmith was an English born Hebrew and the advance agent of the "Fortunes of War" dramatic company which was billed for New Berne, but went to peices before reaching here. Mr. H. A. Latham of tbo Washington Gazette is preparing for a Christmas edition of bis paper on a big scale. It is to contain twelve pages or more, and 7,600 copies of it are to be devoted to New Berne and its advertisers. Lost year Mr. Latham issued a Christmas special -of 5,000 copies. The Presbyterian bazaar proved very successful and entirely f&tisfactory to the promotore nearly everything was ..sold - by about ten o'clock. It was a pteas ura to take a'look ut the many beau- iiful articles and not many who looked resisted the temptation to become the possessor of one or mora of them. Weltiel and GanJy, oyster ennners, Lave liberally oflered all of the shells they have from time to time lor the road if the town will simply move them out of the house and put them en it. With such a start tho road may be con sidered a certainly, and having built the one road and realized its advantages, vc doubt not that evciy street in the town will be similarly treated, as the material is abundant, Beaufort being on tlie sea. Shell roads will greatly enhanee tlie attractiveness ol this noted pleasure sea side resort, rnd we are glad to si e tin improvement started. Heard u Long Distance Tho Telegraph operators at Jack sonville has rt-poited to the Wil mington Messenger the remarkable fact that lie heard tlie report ol the pieces last Friday night .luring the tire works. It is supposed the sounds were ruried on the telegraph wires, as the scene of the lire works was not lar from the telegraph line, but even then it is a remarkable Mieident as Jacksonville is 53 miles from iViliniugton. The filing oi the cannon and the rattle of the musketry during the sham-battle were heard by people living sixteen ami eighteen miles from the city. Judge Bond's Successor. Judge Siinonton of Charleston, S. ('., has been appointed to till the vacancy in the circuit court judgeship caused by the death of Judge Bond. Judge Simonton is 03 years of age. He was born in Fairfield county, S. C, but removed to Charleston when a lad and has since resided there. He held the rank of colonel in the Confederate army during the war. He has been active in State palitics and was one of the Demo cratic leaders in the State Senate for years. Privileges Awarded. The following privileges for Fair week, for which sealed bids were recently advertised were awarded yesterday: Confectionary to Royal & Hill. Sandwiches to W. P. Bunus. Cigars and tobacco to John Dunn. Ths restaurant privileges was not awarded bids for it can still be made. Saturday is likely to prove the derid ing day. Rev Thos Hume D. 1). To night. No one should fail to hear Dr. Hume to nifeht. He will lecture in the Y. M. C. A. Hall as 8 o'clock. Subject Shakes perian Side Lights on English Life. The lecture will no doubt be very in teresting. A large audience should greet this well known and very popular leeturer. The charge for admission is 25cts. Coming and (Jolng. Mrs. F. M. Simmons and children left yesterday morning for a protracted stay in Raleigh. Mr. G. W. Moulton, left to spend a week at Jacksonville, on business. Miss. Lorcna Henderson who for some time lias been boarding with Mrs. S. C. Credle, will return to her homo in Golds boro tills morning to spend Christmas. Fatal Affray Near Kington. Two white men, Herbert Russ and Ernest Jones, just outside of Kinston got into a dispute while hauling fodder from a field Friday, as to which one should get down and open a irate through which they bad to pass. High words ensued, and both got down to fight. Russ drew a knife and Jo.ies got one of the long cart rounds thnt are us'd for hauling fodder and other forage and with thit he felled Russ to the ground, killing him with the blow. Jones was immediately apprehended and is now in Kinstin jail under the charge of murder, awaiting trial in the next xerox ol superior uourt. lioUlstxjro Argus. Twenty-nine barrells of whiskey were seized in Davie county Monday for alleged violation of internal revenue laws. The plank piled in Mr. Henry Griffins lumber yard about fourteen miles west of the city on the line of the A. & N. C. R. R. burned Tuesday just before noon. We did not ascertain the amount ot the loss, but as we understand the bulk of the lumber wos in tho rough it may not rnn very high. However as it comes right on the heels of another fire it must be a serious, matter to the owneiT; His mill was burned only a few weeks ago.
