SEA CURIOSITIES
THAT WILL BE SHOWN AT
THE EAST CAROLINA -
FAIR.
Already Exhibits are It lnr Collected
and Visitors are Making Ar
rangenvntg for Coming.
Messrs. Cieo. X. Ives i Son have two
rare fish already whicl? they are saving for
exhibition at tlie approaching East Caro
lina Fair one is a herring hog,- this is a
fish of the porpoic specie-, thu specimen
weivhs two Hundred pounds, and is the
lily one known to hav been ui'lit in
the water ot this region, the other fish on
hand is a large sh irk: liU weight U three
or lour huu'lrc I pound.
Mr. It. C. Jones ol Morehead City i-
making a varied and highly inti ri -! mg
collection ot ocean tiovcllics and wonders
for exhibition at our Fair. Among tin m
are two young devil hah. I hey are des
cribed as having eight lcgJ each with
suckers and tail-", the body shaped .miic
thing like a long lii-!i pot ito. Tin- leg-
l" the smaller octopn-arc i iiu In - !oag
and t he l.u ni : one tin incln -1. The little
one weighs seven oicici tlie ol her two
pounds one ounce.
t )thcr ocean curiosit ie-; n .Mr. ,lonc"
collection arc a dart twelve inches long
by a hairiuch 01 diameter, two sea ciah-
one with small spots and the other with
large spots, a sen spider, a babler, a baby
lobster, an ink sipjid four inches long
with twelve arms. This ocean inhabi
tant swims bac kward and is covered w ith
small blnck spots, a pcrlectly lonin d sea
orsc and another curiosity shaped likcu
craw fish, but with two extensions re
sembling tails, that come fiom the head
and taper down to a point. It has legs
like a shrimp or lobster hut no claws.
All these will be at the Fair in Febru-
rary and others will be added to the same
collections as the time get nearer. That
such collections are being made so far in
advance proves that people have Ihe Fair
in mind and intend to have enough new
things shown to make it pleasing to
every one. No doubt there are many pre
paring for the Fair. It is time for our
people each and all to begin to turn their
thonghts in this direction. There will
lie a very large number of strangers at our
Fair and we wish to give all a reasonably
fair idea of this c juntrv as shown forth in
e ,ch and every department of the Fair.
People are not only planning for ex
hiuiis but planning for coining also. Kvcn
as lar back as two months ago. parties
who intend to make lengthened visits to
the Fair were writing to the city engag
ing rooms for the time. Everything
looks unusually bright for the Fair in
every particular.
A Beautiful Fountain.
Mr. Geo. Oaskill received yesterday the
prettiest soda water fountain ever seen
here. The front ls'of finest Itnliaii'mai l)lo,
having the appearance of pearl. Tho
sides and upper part are of handsomo
motteld North'iCarolia niaihlc a kind
which lies at and near tho boundary be
tween this St.tc mid Tennessee which is
the only phrcc in this country where it
can be found.
Au ornamental stand surmounts the
tountain proper; it is of wood in white
and gold, and a plate glass mirror is at
the centre. The sides of the stand are
inlaid with the same beautiful Italian
marble of which the Irout is jjinade makes
a lovely affect. The fountain has the
latest improved drop cans and the bot
tom of the ice box is covered with quite
a number of divisions on which the ice
rests each of these holds just one glass
full which insnres perfect coldness when
drawn. As fast as they are emptied the
pipes fill them Irom the main supply.
Thus it can be seen that the fountain
combines the useful and the ornamental
in a marked degree.
The cost of the fountain was $750.00.
