HAWAII.
The Journal is anxious to stand
with tne Administration npon all
questions relating to its domestic
and foreign policy.
We have more than once ex

perfectly agreed as to principle and
yet may be very far apart aa to

The Hawaiian affair is very much
maddled. The public that is tbe
Ainerioan public-are quite in tbe
dark, but what little light baa

the spirit of Democracy.
Perhaps one reason why we can
not see the wisdom of tbe course
pursued towards Hawaii is, we are
not in position to see it as it ap
pears to Mr, Gresham. We were
born Democrats. Every hour of
life we have breathed the air . of
Democracy. In our early manhood
the Democratic party was confront
ed by the Whig party. Since tbe
war, the Republican party has been
the opposing power, waging in
cessant and relentless war upon
Amerioan Democracy.
The Secretary of State was born
a Republican. He was baptized
at a Republican font and consecra

worshiped at Republican altars,
until his vaulting ambition over
leaping itself, and bejessayed to be
come the ministering High Priest

cause he ooald not be, he went out
and stood alone on a bleak moun

( very natural that this writer and
Walter Q. Gresham do not see
alike on maters political .
