Mayor Ellis us Sportsman. Mayor Win Ellis, w ho has been spend ing a little over a week at Maple Cypress returned home yesterday. He lias been taking a good hur.t. He brought 63 partridges borne with him. Hi" went partridge hunting five days and killed 298, a very good average. Mr. Ellis went turkey hunting once, but did not meet with the luck of secur ing any of them shooting eomc feathers out was as near as he came. On the whole, the sport was so good, however, that he will write a sportsman lriend to come down and try it. The Raleigh correspondent of the Wilmington Messenger announces that Mr. T.K. Bruncr will come to New Berne "about the end of this week to make ar rajjgements for the great Mid-winter Fair." Be says the exhibit will fill a large room. It is now tho belief of the Wayne coun ty authorities that Orange Page and Mary Smith, who muidered Rosa Hay wood, did not go direct to Norfolk by rail, but are making thjir way in that direction along tho public roads. The Burlington News gives quite a lengthy article in favor of reductiou of tobacco arceage. It claims there ' is now enough tobacco in this country to keep the country chewing and smoking for two years, without any great increase in the cost, if the stock was not cornered aud the price run up. We acknowledge the receipt of the premium; list for the New Kerne Fish, Game Oyster, Agricultural anil Mechani cal Fair. New lierne has become cele brated through these Fairs and there is no doubt but they h .ve done much to advertise not only New Berne and its viciiityln:t tho whole of Eastern Cam lina. Being held in the month ot February these Fairs attract great attention and are visited by large numbers of northern pen pie who go away carrying to their homes in the frozen north glowing pictures ol the climate, grand resources and open lieurtid people they found in the Old North State, with the inevitable result of bringing men of energy and capital to locate nnd invest in a country so far su pertor to their own. The New Berne people claim that this Fair will be far superior to its predeces sors, if S3 every one who can should visit it, a9 we can testify that the others were well worth seeing. The town is situated at the entrance of White Dak river into ISogue liny, with an inlet of 1511 yards width and U feet depth. The bay is three miles in width opposite the town and is separated fiom the ocean by a line sea beach covered with tine forest trees ill it could be made a splendid grove. Hall stales that the soil sur rounding is admirably adapted to truck and fruit finning and the ordinary pro ducts ol the soil.
