The bosiness of exporting frozan snuttoa from New Zealand to Great Britain has proved very profitable. The price or sheep in ine ooiodj have been too high to permit of a profit upon the export of mutton. . Vhtimmm Wldon Stanford, of Melbourne, Australia, waa bequea thed 300.000 by his brother, the lata HAnfttor TjIai.d Stanford, of California, bnt he has made known to Mrs. Stanford hie intention to transfer the entire snm to the en dowment fond of the Lei and Stand ford university. The Winston Republican says that we notice in oar Northern ex changes that applee are being im. ported from Europe. E inter lillies from Bermuda. Babbit skins from Europe &, while with ns Jeoally, citizens are Invited to parehase Kansas City beef, cabbage, apples, &o.,from the North, floor and grain from the West, with two thirds ot what we tue in home, offioe, workshop, on farm, etc., im ported from a distance. And then we grumble at Providence and things in general because we are poor, The Lord helps those, we are taught, who help themselves, and the remedy is with eaeh individual to do his or her part, to live more eoaomtaaL and manufacture and prod ace for ourselves what we de pond upon others at a distance to do for ns, and until this is done we ean content oarselves to accept a rood deal oi what auoears as un fortunate and mislortuut, simply because we do not choose to reme dy it. Now we would only ask. woald a change be for the better! Moat assuredly von will answer vim. A rain we ask voa if this -change is practicable! You say yes. Well then we say quit your chron ic grumbling until you hare given it a thorough trial. IlGlSXiTITI DEL IT. . We often hear of the Law's Da- lay, and men are excused for taking the law la their own hands epoa the plea that Jostles is delayed beyond the power of soman esdaranoe. .; ' ". ' , - -". 4 Jast new the eoaatrj is suffering front delay in legislation. Ne fair-minded and intelligent objects to serious deliberation and, careful forethosght npon ones, tlonf 01 commanding Import, bnt when the Judgement is convinced and the argiaett exhausted noth ing Is more commendable than prompt and reeolate notion. ; No subject was ever more thor oughly disoc-aed than the tariff. With a patience almost without a parallel the people listened to aid raad debates noon the tariff from year to year, and inl 893 they de clared by an aapreeidented major ity for a tariff for revenue only in accordance with the Chicago plat form. The demand for tariff reform became imperative, and Congrats was urged by every consideration of public and private Interests to execute the deliberate judgement of the people. For many months the Wilson bill has been before Congress, and the people are tm patient of delay. They cannot take the law in thsir own hands, but must continue to snffer from the oppressive burdens imposed by the infamous MoKinley law. For a time Congress threw off its lethargy, and the House pass ed the Blair bill for the coinage oi the aeigulorage, with commendable promptness. It weot at once to the senate, and even there It met with no cb- atrnotion nntil it had passed the third reading, and it was in order to vote upon the measure. Then there was a pause. Senators objec ted to saoh prioipitate actio o. A motion was made to reconsider the vnt bv which the bill passed to the third reading, and no man can tell when the end will be, The bill may pass tomerrow, or it may be delayed much longer. That it will eventually pass seems to be con ceded, but it is very generally be lieved that it will be vetoed by the Preedent. It cannot be expected that the bill ean be passed over the Presi dential veto. And thus time is lost and the hopes of the people disappointed. There is moat oaaosountable de lay in the confirmation or rejection of Mr. Simmons. Senatorial cour tesy is exhausted, and the vote on Mr. Simmon's nomination should betaken without father delay. Senator Vance-loved by his con stituency and respected by all- has expressed his honest convic tions, and it is the doty of the Sen. ate to take definite action. North Carolina is represented in the Sen ate, and, while the absenoe of Sen ator Vance is matter of deep regret, it should no longer retard the set tlement of a vexed question se riously affectine the harmony of the Democratic party in North Car olina. It is of the utmost importance that oar decks be cleared for action at the earliest possible moment. The MoKinley law mast be repeal ed, the financial situation improv ed, and internal dissensions healed, before we can entertain a reason able expectation of victory in tbe approaching elections. The dream was so vivid that Mr. Bass awoke from his sleep irreatlv impressed, fully beiiev inai iub tihiuu nwuu uiuve a true one.
