Later, many, upon invitation went for ward, and about litleen professed conver sion. It was a season of glad refreshing. I'he Present Warm Season and Pre ceding Ones. Mr. Daniel Lane of Bellair, was in too see us yesterday and while in the office the present remarkably warm and un usually quiet March was discussed. Mr. Lane tells us that the prevalent impression that fruit trees have bloomed earlier this season than they generally do is a mistake, on the contrary they are a trifle later this year than last. He noticed each season and is sure of it. However, the difference is slight. Trees never vary much, like the annuals, from their accustomed periods, whatever the influence of the seasons may be. Mr. Lane is among those, who despite the summer like character of the present weather, is apprehensive of future cold. He recalls that the April of 1849, made memorable by a snow of two or three inches on the 15th of that month followed by a very destructive freeze ws pro ceeded by a March very similar to the one we are now having. ' .-He Informsus that by., that freeiie, not only were crops, (far advanced for the season) rout : even trees ' . affected. A late edition of Branson's : Almanac contained a record of " the "year's which bad extraordinary weather of -any kind and the winter of 1827-28 seems ' to have been more remarkable for its mild ness than any other. It is Btated it was not severe enough to kill cotton in ; the fields. Mrs. 8. F. Stanly of New Berne corroborates the statement - and tells ns that on Christmas day1827, she knocked apples off the tree with a fishing pole, and that the whole winter through was so mild that farmers were' put to great trouble about their pork. Meat was not imported in those days as now, and - the smoke houses were filled with the home made products but great . quantities spoiled and had to be taken- out and buried. ;' ".;' -'"..'' , ; Mir Wha'ej's Millinery. :; ' Mrs. , 3, Whaley arrived from New Yurk and Baltimore markets yesterday morning, will be pleased to show her cus tomers and .he public new goods today. Cutting Up the Whole, The cutting up of the w halo at Shack ford's Banks off Morehead wa begun at tow water Thursday and was rushed with all dispatch possible. The whale having been partially in the water all the time , a full view was not obuin'd of him until J about that time. His head was in the deepest watei and least exposed. We are told by one of the lato visitors that the tongue was about the size of a large pony, the n.outh is said to be about tn feet, and the whale-bone obtained from his mouth was about three hundred pounds. As this cominidity is now. scarce and very high, it will add a considerable sum to the amount that will be realized fiom the sale ot the oil. We , are informed that the market quotation Ou it is seven dot a pound.- This is doubtless higher than it Would bring if sold in bulk, but, un questionably it will be a very good item ot profit to the lucky fishermen, .
