The Way to DeteniiM Aheit
Lean thai art aa the
DlTldlaf Line
We bare recently received criticisms to
the effect that In giving mention of pa
tients at Johns Hopkin.' Iloapital and
similar distant institutions we are giving
tbem free the best kind of advertisement
they eould have, to the disadvantage of
home physicians just as skillful and
North Carolina institutions ol like char
acter jnat as thoroughly equipped though
not on as large a teste as those in greater
centers ot population. We have this to
say: In many cases like those spoken of
the parties have wide circles of Irienda,
good subscribers to the paper, who are
anxious to know how their afflicted ones
are lairing, and in no way can tbev all
obtain the information so readily as by
(he newspaper statement, and to keep
back the news when we have it would
not even be justice to them.
Every" one knows that the Jocrnal is
a home paper and works as strongly lor
home aa it is possible for a paper to do
under the circumstances, but-it should be
at the same time a naci paper and while
we admit that such mention is a fine ad
vertisement for the institution receiving lt
we will never withhold items which con
tain genuine news for fear that some in
dividual firm, institution or organization,
abroad or at home, will receive benefit
for which it does not pay The point is
that the matter, though it really is of
private interest and calculated to do
private benefit, i also of public interest
and for the public benefit.
It is indeed a difficult matter some
times to correctly discriminate between
what is news and what is advertising; a
journalist has to use his judgment in the
matter and he cannot in justice to either
himself or patrons hold back news items
in bis possession even should there be a
private benefit thereby.
But there is another phnso of the mat
ter: II the matter in question is one in
which only those who receive the benefit
are interested it is then purely -an adver
tisement, no matter how large the num
ber interested may be, and even where it
is a matter in which the public, or n
large portion of it is interested, the mo
ment the news part is exhausted every
thing that follows, whether a lengthening
of the article in the Fame issue or subse
quent references, (unless something new
develops) is advertisement, pure and
simple, and belongs to be dealt with ac
cordingly.
The Free Will Baptist Church
During the series of meetings just held
in the Free Will Baptist church the
building was filled nightly to its utmost
capacity even to the space in the aisle be
ing occupied, and as a rule there would
atill be quite a number around the door
unable to gain admission.
This condition of affairs shows the wis
dom of that denomination In erecting
their house of worship in the western
part ot the city which other churches
have greatly neglected in the selection of
building sites. The field for work in
that direction has for quite a time been
open, quite a number live in the western
part and the population near by is in
creasing. It is well that a permanent es
tablishment has been effected.
