(looil Work or Our Knitting Mill.
The New Berne Knitting Mill has
added to the variety of its products, and
in addition to the grades of hosiuy it ha.
hem placing on the market, it is now
getting out a beautiful half-hose from
line long staplo cotton in several colors;
and coirespondiug makes in lisle thread.
These additions add considerable to the
variety of the mills production. All the
grades made heretofore are still manu
factured, including the elegant fist black
ones in half hose and full length stock
ings. Tho operatives who have ben longest
in the mill are getting so accustomed to
the work that some can accomplish about
double what they could a year ago, when
the factory was down oil the wharf, and
they are becoming so skillful under the
supervision of Manager Yost that the
product is about 11s good as can be ex
pected. No one pretends to say Unit the
goods are not fully up in imality with
those of tne same grades made anywhere,
mid sales have been effected elsewhere
against the direct, competion of hosiery of
local manufacture, the deciding ppint iu
favor of the product of the New Berne
mill being, not a cut pi ice, but their
superior finish.
New Berne merchants are finding those
facts out and are giving preference in
every instance to the New Berne made
hosiery. They did this at the beginning,
partially from public spirited motives to
aid in building up a home enterprise, but
they do so now upon pure business prin
ciples as a matter of self interest.
This mill is. running to its full capacity
and just at this time owing to some re
movals can add two or three more hands
who wish to remain long at the work and
become good operatives.
Burden-Bearing.
In all this world of mankind there is
not an unburdened soul journeying
through life. The criminal class of non-
brden-bearers are those who are unwill
ing to taste up tne Duruen 01 set -support,
and so 'add to the degradation and
poverty 'and wretchedness of the human
race. The intelligent citizen who stands
an for good government, and upholds
the rights of the masses is a burden-o?ar
er, ISO truer stanaara was ever pro-
mulaated than the individual belpine In
the common struggle of the burdeb-bear-
lngot humanity's common Durueni. - -To
simply bear 'oar own burdens is not
the teaching of the brotherhood of man.
This Is a very sordid view of personal
dutv to others. ; Do unto others in speech
and - acts ' what we should wish them to
do unto us at all times is a higher and
morw manly- ideal of individual responsi
bility to our neighbors. , ,
Bearing one another's ' hardens in the
pilgrimage of life-from the cradle to the
sepulchre gives joy and consolation and
triumph to our daily living. . , .
