There has been no period in tbe history of the world when men were not ready to say "The Times arejout of joint." That there are seasons of pecu liar depression as well as periods of Donsaal prosperity cannot be denied; bnt the Ttmej are, under Providence, whaf men mali? them. If the farmer neglects the prepar ation of his land, fails to plant and cultivate his crop, the Times will be ont of joint to him and that without remedy. If the merchant neglects his business, makes bad debts and poor C9llections. tbe Times will be so out of joint uh to drive him to bankruptcy. So it is in all pursuits aud vocations ol life. In reality tbe Times are not out of join t and cannot be. Tbe same Ood who set tbe machinery of the universe in motion et ill directs its ooore, and we have the Divine as nrance that there will be seed time and harvest nnto tbe end. Tbe Times are not out ol pint. Some men have a great aversion to forming the acquaintance of work. Work is the panacea. Work, with faith in Ood and man, level i moun tains and spans oceans, gives bread to the hungry and clothing to tbe naked. Let no man stand idle and itn pi tusly charge God and bis fellow man with his own miserable fail ure. Poverty and sloth lie in tbe ho vel, while riches and industry live in palaoes. God bus made Labor of tbe agents of bis beneficent provi dence, and no human ingenuity can escape its requirements nor detract from its honor. The Times are ont of joint to those who despite Labor, bnt they are redolent of blessings to tbe industrious, the i tuous and the good. rnoHiBiTiox. We have never been in favor of making Prohibition a political question, It belongs to morals rather than to polities'. Neverthe less we have watched results at tending efforts to bring about Tern perence reform whrougn the Agen cy of political parties. It bag always been questionable whether Temperance has been ad vanced by association with poli tics. The Eepnblican party has for years beea in tbe habit of inser ting a prohibition plank in all of ita platforms, bat a change is tak iag place. The platform adopted by the Kansas Republican state conven tion last weeek shows the drift of the tide against prohibition. The prohibitory amendment to tbe con stitution was adopted in 1880 by Bepnblican votes, and tbe party has always hitherto endorsed the policy and demanded its enforce ment. There was the more reason for a positive deliverance this year, because there is a movement which seems to be gaining strength for a resubmission of the question to , the yoters, with the view of getting the amendment ont of the Consti tution. The Republicans were im portuned to stand their ground, bat the managera concluded that f- there were more Totos to be gained .by ignoring the subjeot, and lor v the first time a platform waa adopt ted which says not word the liquor question.
