Oar common sehool system is accomplishing much good and we trust that its bletsiogs will be extended until a practical busmen education will be within easy reach of all our sons. As North Carolinians we ure proud ot the State University, and we Methodists would be ashamed ofoarselvee if we did not rejoice in the prosperity of Wake Forest and Davidson, but we coniess to a warmer attachment to Trinity Col lege. In the past it has met the ex. pectatione of its friends and we trust that its future will be still more glorious. For the College to reach Us highest efficiency, the light man ehonld be at its head; and, in our opinion that man is L. W. Craw ford. Without intending to retlect upon the past management of the Institution, wc have no hef nation in saying that the President of Tiinity should be a North Caroli nian who is intouoh with the great mass of North Carolina Metho dists. Who is wider or more favorably known to our people than Brother Crawford! For lour years he has been con nected with tba College and is ded icated to its interests. lie has every requisite lor the position. His scholarship may not be equal to some of the great -educators' ol the doy, but it is equal to the demands of the place and the occasion, while in execntive abil ity, in personal magnitism and confidence-inspiring finalities he is the peer of any man. Give ns Orawfori for President and associate with him an able faculty and the Inture of Trinity is assured. EDICATION. In a reeent article we took occa sion, in referring to the approach ing campaign, to insist upon bring ing living issues to the front and making it essentially a State cam paign having for its object the honor of the State and the welfare and happiness of the people. We expressed a preference for a plat form favoring the construction and maintenance of good roads and the improvement and enlargement of onr common school system. Oar object this morning i i to call attention to the excellence of oar graded schools and the demand for longer terms and a more .cardial sympathy in the greats wrk they are accomplishing. If the late Commencement ex eycises at the University, David son, Trinity and Wake Forest col leges, and at the female schools and colleges at Salem, Raleigh, Oxford, Greensboro, Kinston, and other educational centers, evince progress, it is largely attnbatabie to the graded school which are the foundation stones on which our more imposing educational struc ture rest. To one brought np nnder the "old field school" system, the graded schools present a revelation lit once surprising and inspiring. Having observed the progress of events, we will not say that the present system is perleot, bat we know that it surpasses (be former M the merideaa sun exoeeds in brightness tbe fir t ray of the mora f. It an where there is thought f abandoning tbe graded ecbool, l.-t those who are cor.tempUting i in ch an ge consider how it ! p im' to build withont foundation, aud what better foundation can be U-ul for onr educational system thin that furnished hy the graded echool. North Carolina cannot afford to orgWt the education of her chil dren. Her honor, no It limn the. . happinean una protprrity of her people is involved. General edu cation ii an imperative demand 1 wherever suffrage is general, and,! in a stale where sutT age is uuivei. sal, education should be univer sal. It is admitted ' a.. indeed it U evident ihat ie state of North IkrAiinaAnnnnt im1 ...1., ,. iU Dobltc instruction fur ..I ber uln dren. She can keep tbe graded schools going long enough to I ty the foundation, afterwards the work of the State mast be supple mented by individual effort, and that community is recreant to doty that fails to secure adequate facili ties for higher education. We must keep pace with tbe ttmea in which we live if we would leave our impress upon tbe ages. L;t us build factories, deversify labor and beautify our homes, bur. above all, we mast educate onr children. VAXCEBORO CORUESPOXPEXCE. Paragraphs Picked l'r and Brie II y Tjld by I. S. An Industrial Problem, A rather startling industrial de velopment is reported from Victoria, whero women havo now been sub stituted for men at no fewer than two hundred railway stations. The result has been a saving of 30,000 por year In salaries. The average vages paid to a station mistress is 20perycar, whereas "the objection able malo'' used to receive 150.
