Isaac Union settled first on White Oak

Andrew Scott).
Isaac Onion with Edward Sturkey, and
others, represented the comity of Onslow
in the Provincial Congrosw that mat in
Hillsboro, the 21st of August, 1775. This
Congress niailo active prepamtion lor the
war of the Involution, then just at its lie
ginniug, and organised the first Conliuen-l-.tl
troojis pf tho North Curulina line, to
the 1st Ueginicnt of which (Col, James
Moore) Isaac Union was appointed Sur
geon, bin conunlsslon bearing date 1st
September, 1775. On the 1 1 tlx of Decem
ber, 1776, he was appointed Commissary
of the 9th Uegimtnt of Continentals, of
which his relative, John Pugh Williams,
was Colonel, and in March, 1777, Ue was
transfered to t(iq 7th Regimen (Colonel
Janies ijogun), as I'avniaster, in which
capacity he served until July, 1778, when
the regiments of the North Carolina Line
were reduced in number and consolidated.
It is worthy of note that his cousin of the
same name, Isaac Ouion of the New
Rochelle family, also sewed as a Contin
ental officer, having been in the New
York Line throughout the war of . our
Revolution, and afterwards In tho United
States Army.
The Provincial Congress of August,
177S, of which Isaac Ouion was a mem
ber, was a very able body, and one that
legislated wisely and well in very troub
lous times. Against it Gqv. Joaj'tih 'Mar
tin, from, his safe retreat on board the
man-of-war "Cruiser," in the Cape Fear
River, fulmicated his wrathful proclama
tion of August 8th, 1775, in which he for-
Dade the assembling ot the Congress, and
denounced it as "one of the black artifices
of falsehood and sedition." The Cong
ress returned the compliment by order
ing the document to be burned by the
public hangman, styling it "a false, scur
rilous, malicious ayd Seditious libel.", ' '

same proclamation complains of "treason
able proceedings, of an infamous Commit
tee at New Berne, at the head of a bod v

place, repeated insults and violences of
fered to lis Majesty's ' Subjects, by these
little tyrannical' and Arbitrary Combina
tions." Towards the end of tlie Revolution
Isaac Guion settled in New Bern. In
1789, by act of Assembly, be was ap
pointed a Vestryman Church warden as
be is called in the Act (Chap. 82) of
Christ Church, with Richard Dpbbs
Spaight, Major John Davefi and six others
and fit tM years 1799 and 1793 be repre
sented the town, then entitled to bor
ough 'representation in the General As
embly. In May; 1808, Isaac Ouion died, in tne
Mthyear of his age his wife, Ferebe,
surviving him until February 10th, 1811,
when tke died in her 65th year.
