Our townsman Mr. R A Richardson has Brown Leghorn pullets which were hatched on the 15th of March that are now laying. Tha Beaufort Herald tells of an at tempted but unsuccessful burglary in that ton. The thief went up to the top of stores and tried the scuttles. He found only one loose, however, and did not succeed in getting any booty at that place though he thus entered the upper story. Rev. W. W. Lewis has just concluded a meeting in the Free Will Baptist church at. Tuscarora. There were seven oiiver sions and all the converts were baptized Friday morning. He passed through the .city Friday night en route to Brice's creek church to hold meetings for a week commencing that night. Inadvertently the date of the Senatorial convention of the eighth district was atluded to as AuguBt 11th, when it should have been September 11th as it occurs in the railroad notice of low rates to the conveutiou and in all other references to it. Bear in mind the true date is Tues day September 11th The Judicial convention of the Seventh district, held at Fayettevllle did consid erable balloting Itefore a choice was reached, but at last, after two and a half hours steady balloting 427 ballots being taken N. A. McLean, Esq., was made the nominee lor Solicitor. There were six candidates but the best of reeling pre vailed throughout. , Owing to the afternoon shower the lawn party was changed to a festival in side the Fair restaurant building. It was patronized by visitors to the sham battle and by others who came afterward. It was hardly as successful howevtr from a fluancial stand poini, (the stand point urgently desired) as if it bad been held in the more easily accessible business part of the city. A slight accident to the engine bring ing the regular passenger train in on the A. & N. C. road yesterday morning in capacitated it at Uavelock. The news being telegraphed to the ci y a train was made up promptly and run on through to Qoldsboro, making all connections and an eagine was dispatehed to the relief of the train, taking it on through in time to make all connections but one. The damaged engine was placed in the shops for repaiis. The Manufacturers Record tells of a North Carolina cotton mill that has aver aged 22 per cent, per year for six years, nd of another one which has doubled its original capital in five years, besides pay ing 18 per cent, and buying new machin ery out of Us profits! We wonder what kind ol showing the New England mills can give against this. The South is bound to become the great cotton manu facturing centre of the world, and New Berne should easily realize this and keep pace with the development of the In dustry. We have advantages for the business even greater than the average of souuiern towns. . L. Willis. THE BATTLE FOUUHT. Not With Ballets, Bat B ank Cart ridge! -A Brilliant Engagement. A great deal ot interest had been mani fested in the sham battle between the two sections of the New Berne Naval Reserve. The Division under command of Lieut. Clark, marched from its armory about sunset, forty strong, to the fair ground?, where section 2, in charge of Chief Petty officer Daniels, was placed at the north west corner of the grounds under cover of buildings erectel for fair purposes. Section 1, in command ol Lieut. Roberts, was formed in line at the southern extre mity of the raco track with the twelve pound Howitzer at its right. Th'e former section made the advance, but no sooner were tbey in tiring distance than a few sharp report) tang out from the enejiy secreted in an entrenchment. This was met with a fusilade from section 2 which was rapidly advancing and Uring at intervals, always kneeling or lying flat on the ground. Their expos ure, and the rapid and continuous tire trom their opponents, aided by the big howitzer which bellowed forth, necessi tated a retreat. Section 2 came from behind their breast-work where they had been so stub-b-irnly planted, and made a charge. Daniel-', who was so admirably aided by his petty officers, soon rallied bis men, and again the two sec ions were brought face to face, and the contest waged with fury. The darkness was turned into light, and firing was so rapid that it was one con tinuous roar, each contending for the supremacy, and showing no disposition of yielding until all of their ammunition was exhausted . The young men acquitted themselves splendidly, and were congratulated by the commanding officer for their discipline, and soldierly bearing. Lieut. Winslow, commanding the State Buttallion, was on the grounds and pronounced the entire manocuvers of exceptional excellence and praisworthy. There was a number of spectators pres ent who spoke of the engagement as ex citing and thrilling. Among ilium were a few Confederates who spoke in the highest terms ot the naturalness in re semblance to real battle. Baptism Tomorrow Across Nense River Rev. J. W. Rose, of Cove, is meeting with considerable success in serving the several churches-under his charge. A few days ago we noticed the week's meeting which be held in the church at bis home which resulted, in twenty con versions and reclamations. This meeting was held last week. This week Mr. Rose is holding a meet ing in Truitt church, beyoud Lewis' ferry just a little above the city. The meetings have . so far resulted in seventeen conver sions. Six at least of the converts will be bap tized Sunday morning at nine o'clock at the ferry, ta pleasant sail from this side, starting (if the ferry boats are used) from Salter's- wharf. Mr. Rose extends a warm invitation to the Baptist members in New Berne to come over at the time of the baptizing and hopes a nuinher of them will do so. Next week Mr. Rose will be engaged in assisting Rev. A. L. Stough, in hold tng a meeting about four miles trom Einston. 1 0,0 f, Eucampment. The Grand Encampment of the Inde pendent Order of Odd Fellows at their meeting in Fayetteville elected the fol lowing officers: P. H. Pellelier, New Berne, Grand Patriarch. II. E. Since the Inst meeting six new lodges were instituted, three new lodges inrcsus cita, and one charter surrendered during the year, making an increase of eight lodges. Kinsey Seminary Improvements. Kinsey's Seminary will open this fall on a better basis than ever before. Last year was' a very prosperous .one for this fine institution, and, Prof. Kinsey at the close of the commencement announced his intention of making improvements be fore another term .began. All the proceedings of the Populist State convention and of the Republican conference hero were of unusual interest. Your correspondent's constant aim was to get in tho inside, as to news, aud stay there. Your readers knew twenty-four hours ahead about what would be done The Populist are very proud of their convention. Indeed it was the best they have over held. The one two years agi was nothing less than a broad farce. Yesterday Marion Butler was the master hand. If a storm threatened he stilled it with a word. He spoke always with force. He is a fine chairman. If. G Ewari, one ot the Republican friends who was sitting on the stage looking with ph ased interest at the proceedings, said that he wished the Republicans had such a chairman who could control so thoroughly Indeed Butler had the air, and almost used the words of a master. A queer remark was made on the stage, and this was of course an "aside.' It was (hat whatever little conten tions there were in the convention, and there were tew, had been prearranged, for effect, the plat form having lieon printed some days ago, and the ticket for the Supreme court hav ing been arranged evidently a fortnight ago. A dispute would start, a doubt Ik; raised, just enough to lead a casual on looker to think there is no "machine" in this, when lo and behold nt a word the prepared plans were pushed through without dissent. It was the plan up to yesterday morn ing to nominate Professor John Graham for State treasurer, but then a change was made and Mr. W. II. Worth was put up, Professor Graham being complimented with the permanent chairmanship. I)id not the dozen ol Republicans who s:il on the stage, (all save Lu-k in the rear, he at the very front) know just what was toing to be done, almost to the minutest detail? It looks as it they did. Lusk, always a serious man, seemed a stranger to a smile, and Richmond Pear son, who if reports be true, litis an "'army contract'' on bis hands in tho Ninth dis trict, was by no means blithesome. But the other Republicans were joyous. ('. M. Bernard, of Greenville, a great fusionist, was almost.boylike in Ids joyousncss. The convention handled the county government matter gingerly. You were last night told why the line of aetiou was agreed on at the Republican-Populist conference. Ral. Cor. Wil. Messen ger. Host Advertise, A man may guy, And a man may lie?
