HANCOCK, - Proprietor. Local Reporter. fgTEi.tcndal the J'st Ogice at New Berne, N. C.,a ttcorul-elat tnatter. A RAIXKOW. A Southern Associated Press dis patch, dated Washington, August . 3, says: "After the cabinet meeting teday fonr members announced, each to a different person that an agreement had been reached Dy tne Senate and Houne conferees on the Tariff bill. The basis of freemen t was not disclosed, bat one of the most dis ' languished members of the cabinet said to a United Press represent a tative, "you can announce that the PrKAidAnt. will ucn a f ftrilT hill with Hore, theo, is the bow of promise. W do not know the details of the agreement, but it is cheering to learn that a bill will be passed In ten days that will have the approv al of the President. The people have become impa tient of delay and will be snre to hol.i ob-ttructiunists of the Sennte responsible) for whatever evil has resulted. Who are these obstructionists! It is gratifying to know that neith er of tbe Senators from North Car olina bav6 for a moment stood in the way of Tariff reform. We ciiiiuot do better that per mit the Charlotte Observer to-speak for um on tariff Obstructionists. In its issae of tbe .-l b inst. it 8 ays: One can hardly blame Senator Hill for his opposition to the tariff bill with tbe income tax in it, for his State is no doubt very generally Opposed to the income tax and he ia -there to represent his State There is some excuse thoagh not so much for the stand the Louis lana Senators have taken with ref erence to. the sugar duty, for their Siate is largely interested in sngar, thongh it is not its onl) interest, as might be inferred from the zeal of these Senators for a protective dnty on it. The persistency of Mr. Murphy, of New York, (or a heavy dnty on collars and cuff is provin cialism gone te seed and misrepre sentation unpardonable, for all of his constituents wear collars and caffs sometimes, while only a few people in his own town, Troy, are interested in their manufacture. A few New Jerseyans conduct sngar refineries and pay their ignorant foreign labor starvation wages, yet Mr. Smith would defeat the tariff bill rather than see these refiners deprived of their protection. Mary land's interest in coal ana iron is very slight, but Messrs. Gorman and Gibson must have protection for these, otherwise they won't work. What the pncnliar concern of Mr. Brice, of Ohio, in a high protective tariff is, does not clearly appear, bat he is one of the chief of the obstruction ists. Those Democratic Senators naving the poorest defence for their condoo&are Brice, (Gorman, Gibson, Smith and Murphy. Maryland is expressing its opinion of its Sena te very freely and unanimously; so is New Jersey ot its Mr. Smith and New York of Mr. Murphy. It is time that Ohio took Brice in hand, and as for Louisiana, it is very probable that npon a fall vote of its people it wovld support the Uoase in preference to the Senate tariff bill. The country as a whole baa placed its mark on every one of the men named in the foregoing, HUU AV to vcij uoivmu vmbu uuuq jot them can ever get anything from if New Saatherrt Industrial Futerpriseg. Despite the delay in tbe pas sage of the Tariff bill, the South Hemn to hrtYe tsperirtioed a decid ed indnxtiial revival. Forty live 'iw industries are reported by the .rtdttHinan, of Chattanooga, TeuQ., for the pact week alone. Prominent among these now investments have been a $500,000 asphalt enterprise at Fort Worth, Texas; a 1100,000 phosphate com pany at Ouala, Fltt.; a $100,000 8;iv 1 mill at Patterson, Lr, a $100,000 look works at Flordyne, Ark., a $35,000 brick yard at rinqumniiin, 1 La., and a $25,000 oil mill at Nhw- i man, Qa. j The rivalry ot Egyptian cotton j with the American product lias not prevented the establishment i of cotton gins and mills at Gillett, Ark, Minden, La., Callodeu, G., j Lanringburg and Maxton, N. O., j and Waco, Tex., besides r knitting mill at Mad'Gon, j. Another noticeable feature of Southern prosperity has been th-.s erection of tbe Great Kanaffb Electrical Manfactarinf plant, with $2,000, 000 capital, and the establishment of electrical plants at Eeyser, W. Va , Richmond, Ya., and Uoastoc; Tex. Convention Dates. The State Democratic conven tion meets in Raleigh on August 8tb. There is a vant amount of latent power in most of our congregations; and in laTge ohurcbes there is a tendency to say, "Oh jou have enough to do to do the work with out me."
