Holland & Co's., so he speedily went through the allay at tbe rear to see if anything was amiss, and be found the store on fire at the back door the reason the light in the store could not : be seen was that it had been obscured by tbe smoke. Being near tbe fire alarm station he ran directly to it and gave the alarm. Tho fire department responded it once and the "fire was ex tinguished with but very little damage. Tha door was . burned throutrh and the wall scorched as high as the ceiling. If the fire had been undiscovered a few min utes longer it would have had a strong hold. Tbe watchman's services stood his employers in good stead this time. Fireman's Benefit Paid. Mr. T. A Green, Treasurer of. tbe N. C. Boys and Suspicions Characters Should '. Sot be Allowed , to Roam the - ; - Straeto at Klght. . About midnight Monday night a negro boy who; from- biB size was judged to be about twelve years of age, was seen gaa ing into one of the show windows on Middle .. street' Before morning, as has been tbe case before, a glass in one of tbe windows on the street was broken and articles stolen' from tho window. ' Any night, boys, both white and colored and adults of suspicious character, can be seen on the streets until a very late hour, if not the entire. riglit t'lr-iigu. It has not been long ein?e "iv ' iu.ul white boys both of tbem cerUiuly under li'leen years of age, were sees in the post -o dice at two o'clock in the mirni'V. .How came they there and why were tiiey out at such an hour f It , is aj)banie,qn any parents or any ' persons bavins; children under con trol not to keep them under better sur veillance and management than that Groups of boys can be seen on the streets many a night, not ns late poiieibly as the two extreme ones we have just spoken of, but certainly titan hour when they belong at homo in bed. Then there are the suspicious charac ters strolling, loitering perhaps they are not seeking opportunities for evil, perhaps they are, but in either case why are tbey allowed to roam the streets at their own will without giving account of themselves. Isn't it time that iu New Beiuo as in many other cities, auy boy or auy adult who is not known should be made to render a straight uccount of him self that is on the streets alter a certain hour, and in case ho tails ta do so be put under arrest ? It seems so fo us. If this step is taken we doubt not the breaking of store windows and petty thieving thus aud otherwise, which of late has been oc curring at two frequent intervals, will be diminished, and it i'.docs occur the possi bility ot' capturing the ofleuder be in creased. All the members of the committee are also every one of them keenly interested. It is not a committee which leaves everything to the chair mart all hands work. The building of such a road is some thing that concerns every man in the county,' especially every one 'n tIie clty and every one ; who travels over it In constructing such a road leading to a city to bring trade for which the business men cater, every one' should: contribute who can, he owes it to himself to do this, and every public spirited man will do so.
