Generation after ceneratlon of our American schoolboys ' have declaimed , "Sparfetcus to the GlndlatorsM..or "Reg- ulus to the Carthaginians" and prob- ably never stopped to wonder what stenographer among the ancients tool- down these celebrated remarks. As a matter of fact, both were the work f a New England clergyman, Elijah Knllncrcr. "Snurtacus" was written while he was a f young theological student at Andover in 1842 for the rhetorlcal exercises of his class. "Beg ulus" was written three years later for a fellow student to speak in a prize competition. . v .w What college youth of these days could write such forceful orations? These have never been surpassed, and In some schools It has become neces-, sary to bar them from the list aj iprlze ! speaking competitions, so Invariably do they carry off the prizes. f Of all the work 0, Elijah Kellogg 8ide resor f, these alone remain known.
