AMUSE. ME;:NT.S,v "The Leopard's Spots" v Thomas Dbofif Author Of 'fThe Leopard's Spots'"; Rehearsing The Play to The Company. AN ALL-ROUND MAN. .Author Of "The Leopard's Spots" Has Seen Service Thomas Dixon, the famous South ern author, whose new play "The Leopard's Spots" adapted from his well known book of that name is to been seen here on October 13. occupies a unique position in American theatricals. He is an author, dramatist, stage di-J Xector, actor and manager. Heretofore he has produced all his plays in association with other managers but r.his season he has adopted a plan 'whereby he will hereafter present his plays under his sole management. Mr. Dixon personally staged his new production of "The Leopard's Spots," rehearsing the company and directing all the business matters himself. He is sending this attraction on a tour of the principal cities of the South. : In addition he has, a company appearing in his former success, "The Sins of the Father," in the North and West t this season. COM SHOW FULL OF L HUGHS "TTHE LITTLE MILLIONAIRE" IS ONE OF THE SEASON'S BIG GEST "HITS." The Knoxville (Tenn. Journal) has the following to say of "The Little Millionaire," which will be seen in New Bern on October 17th. "George M. Cohan's latest musical farce, "The Little Millionaire," featur ing Bert Leigh and Hazel Burgess, was the attraction yesterday afternoon and night at Staub's theatre, and two large sized audiences witnessed the produc tion. The show was pronounced a' success by all who saw it. "Bert Leigh, as "Bi!l Costigan," was ! by far the finest character in the com pany, while Miss Burgess, as "Miss Primper," the maid, was also good. "The Little Millionaire," as it was billed, "a musical farce,"- filled the bill exactly. It is a clean comedy, and is played by a strong company. The chorus is small, but strong and well trained. "The play is a good one. A situation arises in the first act which when de veloped, furnishes many laughs and . . - V T I " ' J ....... WU.. ..... . bert Spooner, the young millionaire, is engaged to be married but his friend, Bill Costigan, is trying to prevent the . wedding, he himself having once been 'married and now pajing a thousand dollars a month alimony, but his inter est in the affair is not appreciated. Spooner's father is returning suddenly from Europe and it later develops he, too, is engaged to be married, and the fun begins when the elder and the younger Spooner meet. Each has his fiance come to the Spooner home and when they meet it is found that the aunt of the younger Spooner's future bride is the enemy of the elder Spoon er's future. Then it is developed that Costigan's divorced wife and the fu ture Mrs. Spooner, Sr., are one and the same, while the aunt of the younge future Mrs. Spooner was the "other woman" in the case. Finally all ends well. Costigan is re-united with his wife, the elder Spooner marries the "other woman," and the young couple are married. "Helping the play very materially is a good company of performers, who add life to it. Each part is well cast and there was not a weak place. The parts of "Henry Spooner," played by Eu gene Phelps; "Birdie Busy," played by Blanche Harrington; "George Russell," by William F. Schellen, and "Goldie Gray," played by Miss Hellen Leigh, were especially well cast. "During the progress of the play several catchy songs were introduced. There was a quartette number that took expecially well." LOW EXCURSION FARES to NEW BERN, N. C, Saturday, October 4th, 1913. via NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILROAD COMPANY, account BARNUM AND BAILEY CIRCUS.
