Professor Brander Matthews was
talking of certain past participles that
have fallen Into disuse, reports the
Washington Star.
The past participle "gotten" has gone
out in England, although It still lingers
ton with us. In England gotten ls al
most as obsolete as "rmtten. in some
parts of Cumberland the villagers still
use gotten and putten, and a teacher
once told me of a lesson on the past
participles wherein she gave her pu
pils an exercise to write on the black
board.
In the midst of the exercise an ur
chin began to laugh. She asked him
whv he was laughing, and he an
swered:
"Joe's put putten where he should
have putten put."

TODAY.
"THE SPIRIT OF THE ORIENT." (VITAGRAPH.) DRAMA.
Featuring everybody's favorite, Maurice Costello.
This is a splendid picture, full of mistery, very thrilling and inter
esting. Not a dull moment from start to finish, and much to be ap
preciated. Blood is thicker than water. She tries to kill her husband for the
love of a man of her own race. He and she die by their own hands.
"THE FATE OF ELIZABETH." (SELIG.)
A farce founded on the attempted suppression of a risque novel
A very clever plot, and well portrayed indeed.
"THE HEART OF A GAMBLER." (S. AND A.)
A gripping drama of the West. Full of heart thrills, beautiful moun
tain scenery.
"THE ENEMY'S BABY." (BIOGRAPH.)
This is a "Cracker-jack," and you will enjoy this picture very much.
A laugh from start to finish.
Continuous evening performance starts at 7:45 , second imme
