Young in name, young in years and young in experience as the big man, in the big team which the big Penn sylvania university turns out each year. Young as he is in expenlence as a captain this being his first appearance in that role, he looks like the kind of a football -captain who can whin his team into shape, and imbue It With the spirit of "getting there." London Jewelers In Strange Sutt. An Eastbourne jeweler is being sued in London for the ruby and em erald 'necklace which a lady alleges she left with him ' for repair and which he asserted never came into his, or his assistant's possession. The sensational turn in the case, reports The Jewelers Circular,, came when a neighboring jeweler went into the witness box, and, producing an em erald and ruby necklace, deposed that it was left with him in September, 1910, by a lady who had not troubled to call for It, and that to the best of his belief that lady was the plaintiff. The case stands over; but it is strange that while the Jewel case, an uncommon one, answers the descrip tion given by the plaintiff, the, judge stated that the necklace was not ex actly what he would have expected to see from the description given, 'VI Thfe Selz designers arc originators of styles. He would say: "Sup pose you could push a button and thus obtain your dearest wisl love, fame. wealth and power and at the same time cause the death of an unknown person in China. Would you push the button?" Would you? The answer is yes or no, without any lfs and buts. But maybe you can get a slant at your own character by thinking It over. Tuberculosis From Dogs. Professor Cadiot, of the Veterinary school at Alfort, France, has discov ered that dogs not only contract tuberculosis, but can transmit the dis ease to their human masters. By way of comfort he declares, however, that canine Infection is extremely rare. Cats ': and horses, according to Pro fessor Cadiot, are infinitely less liable to tuberculosis than dogs. yf Mi JM Hill PENDLETON IS A TIGER STAR Famous Athlete Has Won University Emblem Five Times Was Foot. ' , ball Captain Last Season. . . :t.r j'.., . v t s . . . -if. ,-... '.i . Of the ' 1,500 undergraduates tn Princeton university, only 44 have the privilege of wearing the varsity ath letic P. according to statistics pub lished there by the local athletic asso ciation. As freshmen are not allowed ito compete on any varsity team there and as a large number of students are excluded for various other rea sons, the statistics show that Prince ton has only 800 men from which to draw candidates for her 16 varsity teams, and this number is cutdown further by a rule which prevents a student from being a member of more than two teams in the same year. The distinction of having received the varsity letter more times than any other man in college is borne -by Talbot T. Pendleton of Berkeley Springs, W. Va., the captain of the football, team during the last season. Talbot Pendleton of Princeton. He prepared for college at Alexandria, Va., and has won the honor three times in football and twice in base ball. As he is a sprinter of unusual ability, he undoubtedly would have won a track P had he not been pre vented from running by the two sport rule. The only other student now in college to have won the letter in more than one sport is Hobart H. A. Baker of Philadelphia. Baker has two foot ball Ps and also the letter in hockey. New Fight Club. Reference the other day by John Alexandra to the late duke of Suth erland as "Strath" has brought out that many English leaders bear re markable nicknames. The marquis of Crewe is known throughout society as "Robin," doubtless because of his fondness some years ago for scarlet waistcoats. No explanation, however, is forthcoming for the name "Blue Monkey," commonly applied to the Marquis de Soveral. 1 Is said that this extraordinary nickname was be stowed oijhe former Portuguese am bassador by King Edward, his inti mate friend. Lord Lonsdale answers to the name of "The Groom," while another equally well known peer is known as "Porker." Perpetual Error. A printer's error in perpetuity! How many of tomorrow's congrega tions know that, when joining in the "Te Deum," they are carrying on, in one phrase of that song of praise, an ancient blunder? '"Make them to be numbered with thy saints," so it runs. And so, when manuscript copies gave place to printed books, was it ren dered in the mediaeval Latin then in use, "numerari" ''to be numbered," as we say in English. Transpose the first and the third letters and you get "munerari," "to be rewarded." Which is what all prayer-books would be printing ,' today, and congregations singing, were it not for that fifteenth century printer's error. 'V ; " "." " '?:''0.4". Stationer. - . The name stationer, used to desig nate one who sells paper, ink, etc., came to be so used in the following way: !, Originally there were two class es, of booksellers, those who had only i carts in which they peddled their wares about the street, and those who I had shops of stalls.1' These latter were j distinguished from their ' wandering ) brethren' because' they Temained sta tionary, and because of the fact that , they did not travel-about they were able to sell other goods besides books, such as pens, paper, etc., and In this manner the articles known as being sold especially by stationers became known as stationery. vi ffK " w xirmvTrcnrrrrr INT AOS One Cent A Word 3XSX: SMALL LUMBER MILL wanted by .
