"I used to know a man." says Abe Peters, "who was the worst bore I ever met He used to stpp me when ever he met me and start with a line of talk, generally wbfut himself, and stay with me for an Dour or more. He was an absentminded man and had a habit of catching bold of a button . of my coat and holding on to that, while he talked. He would hang on to that but ton and Just ramble on and on till I was nearly ready for the bughouse. One day a happy thought struck me. I got out my knife qnietiy and cut the button off and slipped away. He kept right on talking. An hour later friend of mine came along and found the bore still standing there, with the button between bis fingers and talking about the year of the big snow in Mich igan. There ts a villa near Bale christened in a way worthy of Uriah Heep "Klein aber Mein." It would be hard, however, to parallel Uustave Dore's attempt in this direction. He expressed the name of bis bouse at St Cloud in a stave of music with the notes 0 E B A C D (do mi si la do re) which, being interpreted, means Dom telle a Dore. Loudon Standard. NOTICE OF SALE. DAINTY TINY NESTS, Thoae of the Humming Bird Are About the Size of a Walnut. t The most exquisitely dainty home! built by tire bill and feet of birds is that of the ruby throated humming j bird. When completed It Is scarcely j larger than an English walnut and is j usually saddled on a small horizontal j limb of a tree or shrub frequently many feet from the ground. This dainty domicile is composed al most entirely of soft plant fibers, frag ments of spiders' webs sometimes be ing used to hold tbem in shape. The sides are thickly studded with bits of lichen, and practiced indeed is the eya of the man who can distinguish it from a knot on the limb. The eggs are the size of quinine pills. Although the humming bird's nest is exceedingly frail, there appears to be nothing on record to show that any great numbers of them come to grief during the summer rains. It is, how ever, not called upon for u long tenure of occupancy. Wifhin three weeks after the two little white eggs are laid the young have departed on their tiny pinions. Craftsman. Cold, Heat and Humidity. In hot weather less food is needed; there is more blood in the internal organs, the skin acts more and the kidneys act less than lu mild weather, i In cold weather more food is needed; the skfu acts less and the kidneys more. -There is more desire for active ex ercise. ,. Humidity reduces the actual beat of the air in, summer, but increases its oppressiveness and makes people le thargic and relaxed. The perspiration does not evaporate and the pores get elbgged. In cold weather dry air leaves tbe body free to retain or give up its natural heat according to its needs, but moist air brings about a lenk.ige of bodily warmth that is diflicnlt to pre vent. Clothes will not do it. and wind lucreases It. That is why we .feel damp cold so much more than dry. St Louis Tost Dispatch. He says it took his breath away. Irving told him that he had received good reports of the young actor from Bootb and Jefferson in America and arranged to pay him 10 a week if that would be enough. "1 didn't tell him that I would have played the part for notbtng and have done so (lf , had had the premium). I positively received 10 a week to be in- Btructed in the art of acting by the greatest actor of our time! It was worth hundreds to me both from an artistic and a business point or view. The pains and trouble Irving took with DEAD AIR IN THE LUNGS. When You Yawn You Expel It, So Don't Be Afraid to Yawn. Wlth ordinary breathing the lungs are not completely filled with air, nor are they entirely emptied every time you exhale during natural respiration, This leaves a quantity of dead air in the lungs, generally away down in the lower lobes. This is called "residual" air, and after it stays there awhile and becomes foul nature casts about for some means to make you get rid of it. The yawn Is the thing, so nature makes you yawn. You open youi mouth to its fullest extent, throw back your bead, strain with the back nius cles of the Jaw, and you can then feel your lungs move as they force out all the foul air and take in fresh. In this manner are the lungs actually venti lated. Yawning also ventilates the air pas sages in the mouth, throat and upper portion of the chest leading to the j lungs. And again yawning is really an aid to hearing. The cracking sound which you so of ten hear when giving an extra big yawn is due io the stretching and open ing of the eustachian tubes. These tubes communicate between the ears and the back of the throat If they are congested, which happens when you have a bad cold in the head, people complain of deafness. If you feel inclined to yawn then do so. It is nature's way of cleaning out your lungs and air passages. New York American. Curing Wood. Wood has contagious diseases! A stick of wood lu a lumber yard, may be sick and infect other timbers, which later may develop the disease when they are HiipportiiiK great weights in n new building. Some of the diseases are so contagious that in a building they will jump several feet across masonry or brick to some stick of healthy wood Cures have been discussed by I he American Society of Mechanical Kn giueers. Most of the diseases are va rtetiHs of dry nt '".s'"l by fungus, and most of the varieties of the dry roi fungi cannot stand heat much over 10'' degrees, so the most likely cure is f close a building up light.
