Touring on foot along the coast of France, between ' St Nazaire and La RocheUe,- sketching ' by , the way.' 1 rame ' to a picturesque ' spot - where stood a cottage.' A. boy often came and looked . on while I worked. &: was tempted to cease my landscape draw' lng 'and sketch the boy instead, for 1 never saw a finer model of a child of that age. I chatted with him and learned that be lived in the cottage with his mother, a widow; thaf hla fa ther had been a wealthy man, and un til hla father's death, a few. years be fore the family -had lived In a chateau. ' Curious to know something' more of the story,-1 asked the boy if he would present 'to his mother the compliments of an American artist who was on. a sketching' tour and beg shelter for the night under her roof. ', He ran away w;th my message and soon returned to say tbt his mother would be. happy at leant to receive a visit from mon sieur. 1 folded my stool, easel and other equipment and.. -slinging the package on my shoulder, accompanied the child to bis home. I found Mme. Olairmont, his mother, an aristocratic looking as her son. I told her that my curiosity had been excited by her boy as to her family story, and if It would be no intrusion upon her feelings I would like to know more of it She made me welcome and, gave me the facts. She had married late in life a man much older than herself who was both rich, high born and in every way prominent One child, my little friend Gaston, had been born to them at a time when" it was supposed that she was too old to bear a child. Her hus band's brother, who had been looking forward to inheriting the estate, had shown from the birth of Gaston that he was bittwl" disappointed at being supplanted. But he gave no - sign of any Intention to dispute the succes sion till after the death of her hus band a year agone. M. Clairmont had scarcely been In terred when his brother, Martin Clair mont, claimed the property on the ground that Gaston was not his son nor the son of his wife, but the child of one Annette Voudray, a laundress, who had been brought nto the qha teau to be palmed off as the child Mme. Clairmont The claimant ob tained from this woman what purport ed to be a confession to that effect. There, was a trial that' was dragged through the courts for two years; then the highest court confirmed the deci sions of the lower ones, deciding in favor of Martin Clairmont, giving him his deceased brother's estate and Gas ton to Annette Voudray. Mme. Clairmont bad possessed a lit tle " iih.v of her own. with which she bought off the woman so far as Gaston j was concerned, and he remained with; his mother. They had come to live at the cottage. Mme. Clairmont having a small allowance from her relatives. r. . V. L T - t 4t.A - - " statement' One thing surprised mfr that a court should be made to believe that Gaston was the son of a laun- dress. True, he did not especially re- semble his mother, but I have observ- ed that sons and daughters bear the closest resemblance to their parents at a corresponding age. One can hardly expect a child to resemble a parent of .-i- i room for the night which I gladly ae cepted. Her personal effects, furni ture, heirlooms, pictures, etc., had been removed from the chateau to the cottage. The room 1 accepted showed evidence of this; Ove.r the mantel was 0f such deceased persons, or the owners a picture that Interested me. It was of such lotSi show cause why such re roses arranged In an oval shape to moval shol,id not be made or beforP make - a ooraer ; ror a portrait, me portrait was that of an old woman. Stopping in strange places as I did, 1 carried with me the most powerful electric, hand lamp I could buy. In or-, der to see the portrait more distinctly I brought my lamp to bear on It The strong light -revealed that the old wo man's picture had been painted over anntha ntof-TirA . TtiA Atift flrafr nnlnfpri was too indistinct for me to see any more of It than to warrant my assum- ing that It was the bead and Bhoul- ders of a boy. , ' - -. i;The next day I called Mme. Clair- montf s attention to my discovery and was surprised to find that it was also a discovery for her. Being an artist 1 was familiar with 'Processes for remov- tag paint and offered to attempt to take off enough of the first' portrait to rval th- second.- smMTPsHne that there was a remote, possibility of some family evidence behind, it that would bear on ber fortunes. . She assented. ' and I atjonce began my work. . But I was obliged to work in a dark room and with my-electrlc light for the boy portrait was only visible on- der my electric lamp. . By very careful work I succeeded In removing enough of one layer without the others to show the boy's head and was surprised to reveal a portrait of little Gaston. - But his mother said no; t It was the head of Gaston's father at Gaston's present age.- '", ' ' ' That picture brought about a return of the Clairmont estate to' its rightful owners., As to the picture, there wa; but ' one explanation.
