ZMf:-MONDAY. .. ' -.; - (By George H. Manning.) : WASHINGTON, May 29. Pro fessor Edward H. Bowie, official fore caster of the United States Weather Bureau, today held out no prospects of immediate relief from the drouth con ditions which are daily becoming more serious gthroughout North Carolina and Virginia. Hot and dry weather, he stated to the correspondent of The ..New Bern Journal today, will con- tlnue through North Carolina during the remainder of this week, with pro bability of local showers on Sunday . or Monday. There is very 'ittle prospect of rain '. In sufficient quantities to relieve the drouth, which set in with the coming of May, and has continued unbroken since. The showers wl lch are probable next Sunday or Monday will be small local showers of Insufficient proportions - to prevent probable damage to crops of all kinds. )s After the showers towards the end of v the week, Professor Bowie expressed his belief that the hot and dry weather will continue throughout the following week. Reports hav.e been reaching Washing ton from farmers in different parts of North Carolina during the past few days that damage to wheat, hay and all growing crops has already reached the stage where rain cannot wholly remedy and unless rain, is had within a short time, early and late crops of all kinds will be practically lost. ' .: Lack of moisture is now beginning to ; affect fruit seriously, these reports state. Early fruit is stunted in some localities, - and late fruit is being blighted to the point s of ruination. - Insects, thriving under the influence of dry atmosphere, have already attacked trees, and fruit and, many apples are falling, and in places entire fruit-bearing twigs are i dying. . vVhenever Yon Need a General Tank Take drove's The Old Standard Grorc'a Tasteless chill Tonic is equally valuable as a general ; Tonic because it contains the well known tonic properties of QUININE end IRON. .
