C.; Oct. 10 The ' ten rebellious convicts, . who . yester day threw down their ; tools and re- -fused, to i work, were-' marched . into : court this' morning before Judge Turner and their complaints were Investigated. -A , majority of them claimed to be sick with various complaints.; Dr.. Zemas. Fearing, the county physician, was on hand and made a public ex amination of the complaining prisoners. He pronounced their complaints a fake and stated to the court that they were able to work.' r In the meantine, ex-Judge George Ward appeared in court and was con- sulted by Judge Turner and the chain gang, officials. He stated in open court, in the presence of the convicts, that they could be made to work and ought to be made to work.. He said that they should be made to work and his services were at the disposal of the officials to defend them in any damage suits that may arise. ' ' . i Judge Turner instructed the officials of the chain-gang to give the rebel lious convicts an opportunity to go to -work again this morning without pun ishment; Those who still refused should be given a flogging and placed in the county jail on bread and water until tomorrow morning, when they should be brought before him again to be dealt with.
