MILLERS EXPERIMENT WITH
BEEF CATTLE
Bill and Minic Miller are pri-
ma:ily interested in poultry, how
ever, they have developed one of
the best permanent pastures in
the county.
In trying to make this pasture
pay they have experimented with
beef cattle for the past several
years. Last September they bought
several lots of feeder calves which
they turned into their pasture and
kept them on pasture all through
the winter and until these ani
mals were sold without feeding
them anything else except approx
imately ton of hay each th.ough
the w'inter.
The Millers' have kept accurate
records on this experiment. They
have kindly provided us with their
figures. On the first lot of 11 heel
calves bought in September at an
average weight of 415 pounds the
cost W'as $17.50 per 100 pounds or
$72.62 per head. These calves w'ere
sold after 10 months on pasture
and averaged 750 pounds w'eight
and sold for $17.75 per 100 pounds
-or an average of 133.12 per head
giving them a net of $60.50 per
head.
The second group of 11 calves
for part of the bonds of any issue
(having the earliest -maturities,
and another rale or rates for the
balance, but no bid may name
more than four rates for any issue,
and each bidder must specify^ in
his bid the amount of bonds of
each rate. The bonds will be
awarded to the bidder offering to
purchase the bonds at the lowest
interest cost to the Town, suvh
cost to be determined by de
ducting the total amount of thv
premium bid fnmi the aggregat,
amount of interest upon all oi
-the bonis until their respective
niatuiilies. No bid for lo.ss than
all of the bonds ol'i'ered will b,
entertained.
Each OKI must be on a form
to be furnished w'ilh additional in-
formaiion by the undersigned, en_
closed in a sealed envelope mark
ed “Preprsul for Bonds,’’ and
must be accompanied by a certi
fied check upon an incc-iporaled
band or trust company, payable
unconditionally to the order of
the State Treasurer of North Caro_
lina, fur $2,040. 1 he approving
opinion of Reed, Hoyt, Taylor &
Wa,shburn, New York City, will be
furnished the purchaser. The right
to reject all bids is reserved.
1/JCAL GOVERNMENT
COMMISSION
By: W. E. Easterling
Secretary of the Commission
was also bought in Sei)lember and
iveraged 550 pounds each, costing
115.75 per 100 pounds or $86.62
ipiece. Those were better calves
md grew out fa.ster and wci'e sold
n April alter 7 months on pas
ture. T.iey weighed an avo:agc of
350 pounds and sold at $19.39 per
too poiind.s or an average of $164.-
31 each giving a net per animal of
578.19.
The Millers arc careful to point
out that they were only able to
get these gains because of excell
ent pasture, and since they have
•arried on this experiment only
')ne year they would not like to
give the impression that the same
results could be obtained as a
usual practice.
