Stadium Sam Sees Till UNC Play s AsTearn — It's Gonna' Be Rough!' Before the fall of Corregidor fortress in May, 1942, a sailor in vested $700 in cash saving in U. S. Savings Bonds, knowing that the Treasury would redeem them if lost, stolen, or destroyed. He sur vived over three years in prison camp, collected $700 plus interest. Sam is somewhat a-glee over his picking percent ages, as it sits On a healthy .880 average at the present time. However, starting this week things are going to become more tough for all teams involved. Those sophomore-studded teams at the beginning of the season now have three or four games un der their belts and upsets are most likely. In the Big Four, Carolina meets the nation's number-two- . ranking team, Jim Tatum's Maryland Terps. Maryland holds victories over Missouri, UCLA, Baylor and Wake Forest. The Tar Heels looked good against Oklahoma, fair against N. C. State, and terrible against Geor- 9i. It has been jokingly thrown around that the Tar Heels may not show up, and they have good reason not to. After all, nation ally they are ranked behind such powers as San Jose State, North Texas Teachers College and Texas Western. Neverthe less, the Tar Heels will show when they make up their minds to play as a team, they will win one. Until that happens, it's gonna be rough. Winner MARY LAND. Duke’s undefeated Blue Devils are ranked 11th in the nation and I they journey to Columbus, Ohio, to do battle against Ohio State. Sam thinks this one will be an of- j tensive battle. The Dukes will have to hustle, to stop the Buck eyes’ All-American back, Hopa- long Cassidy. The Buckeyes on the other hand, have given up six touchdowns m three games, so they can be scor- ^b^ed on, and Duke will provide the ' i^oughest offense >hat Ohio has ' ' j ui 0 k e clears, ^'Vthe winner will duke. IrMj' Saturday night over in Raleigh the annual 'Wake County cham pionship will be held , between Wake Forest and N. C. State. On paper the Deacons will be favored, but you can throw away the paper on this one. Last year Wake For est won 26-0. They will do the same again, but it will be closer. Winner-WAKE FOREST. The country’s number one team, Michigan, will stay at home and battle a conference team in North western. Michigan has won three games. Northwestern has lost three. That’s about the story. The Wolverines have too much. Win ner- MICHIGAN. Oklahoma, unbeaten in three games and ranked number three in the nation takes on this first conference game, Kansas;. Last year the Sooners won from Kan sas by a score of 65-0. Sam isn't saying it will be quite that bad, but nevertheless, Oklahoma should have little trouble in notching their 23rd triumph. Winner-OKLAHOMA. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame battle an improved Michi gan State team. Last year the Spartans met Notre Dame at South Bend and came away de feated but much respected as they dropped at 20-19 game to the Irish. Notre Dame, as usual, is loaded with talent but watch this one! It could be an upset. How ever, Sam has to string along with that Irish' victory tradition and say—Winner: NOTRE DAME. The Rambling Wreck from Geor gia Tech is sitting in the nation’s number five spot. Tech has de feated Miami, Florida, Southern Methodist and LSU so far thisi year. Auburn has a good South eastern Conference team which beat Florida by two touchdowns while Tech could only defeat the same Florida squad by one TD. This game should be a thriller. It’s being played in Atlanta. So Sam says—Winner GEORGIA TECH. Wisconsin, ranked sixth, goes out to the coast to battle the Trojans of Southern Cal. USC is ranked 16th in the nation and Wisconsin should be the fa vorite. However, the Pacific Coast schools take their games with the Big Ten mighty seri ously. Sam is going out on a limb and pick Southern Cal to upset Wisconsin. Winner — SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. TCU stays at home to battle a strong Texas A andM team. This should be a typical Southwest Conference game. For TCU it’s their first big hurdle if they ex pect to get the Conference title. Both teams appear greatly im- pi'oved over last year and it’s go ing to be close. We have to give the edge to seventh-ranking TCU since they’re playing at home. Winner—TEXAS CHRISTIAN. The Middies from Annapolis take on Penn State in their bid to remain undefeated. Navy has beat en William and Mary, South Caro lina, and Pitt. Pen State has vic tories over Borion U, and Virginia. They dropped their second game to Army. The Penn State Lions lack the roar they once had, so Navy will make it four wins in a row this season. Winner—NAVY. Stadium Sam also likes UCLA over Stanford, West Virginia over William and Mary, Washington over Baylor, Rice over SMU, and Army over Syracuse.
