Farms, Sale or l^ient 32 At least three Orange .County groups are studying the question uf a supplementary school tax, county-wide- o.' within one or qiore school districts. j The Kellogg Advisory Ccmniil- tee for school improvement in Orange County' last night was pre sented figures compiled at its re quest by Superintendent Paul Can- showing yields which might be ex pected for the various schools in ^ the county system under both a | 10c - and a 5e school tax supple- i ment, according to the present 1 property valuation and divided on the basis of teacher allotment. Both the Carrboro and White Cross district school committees are studying proposed tax supple ments for their districts, in order to meet the demands of the Chap el Hill school authorities for an equalization of the payment of non district students for operation of the schooVs. Some 425 students from the Carrboro and White Cross districts attend school in Chapel Kill where school funds are augmented by a 15c per $100 sup plement. In presenting data to the Kel logg group last night, Carr ad vised that on the basis of present taxable property valimtion in the county outside the Chapel Hill d'-s- t-ict, $43,000,000, a yield in the neighborhood of $43,000 might be expected from a 10c levy and $21,- 500 from a 5c levy. Using the teacher allutinent a.s a basis foi- distribution of these funds among the various funds, he presented the following breakdown by ■schools: (the first figure is a per centage of the total teachers for each school followed by the tax yield , for the 10c levy); Hillsboro, 27,9%, $11,997. • West Hillsboro, 4.8%, $2,064. Muiphey, 2.0%, $880. Efland (White), 6.8%, $2,924. Aycock, 8.9%,. $3,827. Carrboro.; 8.9%,. $3,827. White Cross, 2.7%, $1,161. Caldwell, 2.0%, $860. Coiitrai, 20,4%, $8,772. ELand (Negro), 4.7%, $2,02l. Cedar Grove, 10.9%, $4,687. The approximate cost in North Carolina lor several “extras” which might be provided under such a proposed supplementary tax, Mr. Carr said, is as follows: $3,000 for a teacher, $4,000-$5,000 for a band director, $800-$l,500 for a principal’s secretary, and $500- $1,000 for suplenients to coaches. Negotiations, are under way for the settlement of the auestion of tuition payments for the 425 non district school children which the County School Board has assigned to attend schools in the Chapel Hill Special Supplementary School Tax District. The Chapel Hill District Board has ask/d the Carrboro and White Cross District School Committees to meet with it in an effort to ar rive at an appropriate method of compensating the local schools for the at.endance of the children from outside the district, since they re ceive the benefits of the $ .15 sup plementary tax paid locally, yet their areas do not contribute to it. Pi BETA PHI ALUMNA The Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club will meet Tuesday -evening at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Tom Bost Jr., 719 Gamghoul Road. All alumnae are urge to attend as the meeting will feature a visit from ' the prcvice vice-president. TALSE IMPRESSIONS" CREATED: Cooley Cites Need For Farm Surplus Disposal In his speech Thursday night, riaroici Cooley' scored the rivalry j among fr/rm organizations, and the “false impressions” presented by | agricultural officials in regard to he farm program and rigid price supports. j in a public address before the | Zoung Democratic Club, Cooley i ;ald that the best way of farm sur- j plus disposal was still to be found.! He said he hoped' the solution wo'dd b-.i fo-and at, the next ses-j lion of Congress. The three main methods used now—by give-away, exchange for local currency, and distribution by various church groups—have all encountered drawbacks, he said. A special danger area at present, he asserted, is the cotton export subsidy program. He accused Sec retary of Agriculture Benson of concealing the true farm picture and ‘-doing everything to bring the farm program and the farmer into disrepute. Benson leaves the false impression that all money invested in surplus cotten is wasted, while fa.ling to admit a net profit of $267 million in the cotton program,” Coolev said. 172 ACRES, THREE MILES FROM Chapel .Hill. $17,500.
