The cooking and meal prepa
ration center is well-planned as
is evidenced in its corner loca
tion which affords good cross
ventilation, its north-east ex
posure (generally considered
best for climates such as ours)
and its close proximity to drive
and street entrance for ease and
convenience in unloading the
car.

house lay in its substantial and
attractive exterior appearance and
its excellent layout. Although de
signed for the smaller family, the
house contains many features more
often found in larger homes than
this one which has a floor area
of about 1,800 square feet.
Among these are a reception hall
with wrap closet, a central hall
way which permits easy access to
all rooms, three bedrooms, t'vo
fireplaces, a screened porch and a
14’ X 32’ living-kitchen. Theown-
ers enlarged the dimensions ofthe
baths and added the utility room,
not in the plans, next to the screen
ed porch.
In the activities section of the
“living - kitchen’’, the large “old-
fashioned’’ scratch-faced brick fire
place and mantel is the cepter of
interest. Walls here are of pine-
paneled wainscoati'ng and plaster
painted off-white. Window's are the
conventional double -..hung type.
Decorated by Pace, this room, as
well as the remainder of the in
terior, reflects comfort and good
taste. Especially noteworthy is the
sskillful blending of traditional and
contemporary pieces.
Entrance to the screened porch
is made through a door at the
south end of “living kitchen.’’ The
poi'ch is an alternate living and
nctivilie,s area in pleasant weather.
"Formal" Living Room
The living room is keyed'to the
more formal fireplace and mantel,
con.structed of smooth-face brick,
quarry tile and carved wood. Walls I
arc of plaster painted rose-beige.
Accent colors are rose and brow-n.
The large front window has a fix
ed center panel of plate glass w'ilh
narrow double-hung Vindow’s on
either side.
Opening off the right of the hall
way are a, ceramic tile bath, w'ith
built-in racks and shelves. Closet
lighl.s come on automatically w'hen
the doors are opened. 'Bo (he left
of the hall w'ay are two bedrooms.
One is that of Virginia, the Cates’
year-old daughter, '[’he other is the
guest room. A J'ull ceramic tile
bath connects the two rooms.
Virginia’s room has a large walk-
in close! designed to hold clothes
the bathrooms are of rubber tile
which resists scuff marks and is
easy to clean. All other floors are
covered with carpeting.
The lines of the scratch - face
brick walls are interestingly brok
en by, the front and end gables, re
cessed white paneled entrance and
the jogs of the kitchen and guest
room. Landscaping, now in pro
gress, is directed toward provid
ing more horizontal line through
the use of foundation plantings.
