Seo Scout Ship Is Chartered Here;
Sponsored By Lutheran Brotherhood
Charter presentation ceremonies
for the newly-organized Chapel Hill
Sea Scout Ship were held Thurs
day evening at a dance in the Hil
lel House.
About 50 members of the senior
scouting group and their dates at
tended the occasion, at which Bill
Alexander, representing the Orange
District of Boy Scouts, presented
the Ship’s c’aarteir to Joe Augus
tine, Committee Chairman for the
sponsoring Lutheran Brotherhood.
Mr. Augustine in turn gave the
charter to Chief J. A. Watson,
Skipper of the Ship. Members of
the group at present are Tammy
Lefler, senior crew leader; Hay
wood Pendergrass, crew leader;
Ross Jervis, yeoman; and Anthony
Eallenger, Don Loomis, Les Plaentz-
chel, Ronnie Vick, Jimmy Jam-
I erson, and Reggie Head. A number
! of others have submitted applica-
j tions to join, according to Mr.
1 Watson, who is on the staff of
j the Naval ROTC Unit here.
The Ship’s Adult Committee in-
I eludes, in addition to Mr. Augus
tine, Carl Bly.th, Thomas Hoenig,
F. C. Hammerness, Chai.les Napier, j
Mark Burnham, and Bill Kiser.
Finish Basic Training
Chief Watson, in receiving the
charter, praised the members of
the Ship who have gone through
a basic training period in order
I to form the nucleus fo the Ship’s '
crew. “The interest in this g.'oup
has been keen,” he said. “Without
the cooperation of a fine group of
boys it would not have been possi-
ble to succeed with .an organiza
tion like this in a small communi
ty.”
“Our main purpose is to bring
boys of 14 and over lo realize they
are citizens now", and to enjoy
helping build a better community.
At the same time we will encour
age proper recreation and social
functions.”
As their first project the Sea
Scouts “adopted” a large family in
the Empty Stocking Fund cam
paign.
One of their first future pro
jects will be to chart all areas of
water in this vicinity and to seek
methods of preventing water
cidents. A life-saving course will
be taught and the Scouts will also
receive training in other courses
such as marksmanship, navigation,
signaling and radio.
Plans are being made by the
a boat, to be (galled , the “Sand
Bar.” At present the group has the
sponsors to furnish the crew with
use of a cruiser which belongs to
the Occoneeche Council and is lo
cated on Kerr Lake.
