County Tax Listers Meet, Make
Plans Sor Annual January Work
The tax listers of the .county met
at the courthouse Tuesday for a
schooling on method's, tor the 1955
tax listings. The school, was under
the supervision of:’S'^ M. Gattis,
County Tax Supei'vfsof/
During the meeting tax listing
forms were given.,‘{it list takers
as well as information and instruc-,
tions on the procedures for the tax
listing which begins in' the county ,
on January 3rd.
Gattis stated that the law re
quires every resident of the county ,
regardless of age, to give in his j
personal and real property for tax '
purposes. In order to make it eas-'
ler for tax payers^ Gattis stated
that the list takers at a future date
wiir announce a schedule as to
where they will be during the per
iod.
It was also stressed to the reg
istrars by Gattis, to get correct
name, age and address of tax pay
ers: Gattis pointed out that all
male's 21-50 years of age are liable
for poll tax. unles specially exemp
ted by law.
As a yard stick for obtaining the
! values of automobiles, the county
commissioner voted to use again
valuations as set up on cost loan
' value in the National Used Car
I Ma.'ket Report. Tractors will be
' valuated in accordance with the
; National Farm Implement Book
based on an average cost value.
A complete list of livestock sche
dule to be used for 1955 tax list-
I ings has been approved, including
'horses, mules, hogs, milk cattle
beet cattle, and bulls. j
I Each lister was given a guide to
' follow in listing personal proper-1
' ty. Prepared by the tax supervisor
upon instructions -of the, County
Commissioners, the guide contains
average values for variou,s types of
personal property such as electri
cal appliances and farm machinery
at various ages in their existence
to enable the lister to check on;
items given in by the taxpayers.
This is designed to secure more un
iform and equilable listing and

One objective of Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation of
fice in the county next year will be
to reach every, farmer who has
not participated in ASC’s conser
vation program for a number of
yeais.
A. K. McAdams, office mana
ger of the local ASC, reports that
all counties in the State have been
requested to make a special analy
sis of participation in the ASC
program for 1952, ’53, ’54, and ’55.
The results of this analysis will
be used in each office in a con
certed attempt to reach new farms
and-new farmers.
January 3rd through 23rd has
i been set as the time tor signing
[ up for ACP practices for the com
ing year.
' Farmers in Orange County as
well as throughout the State in
I 1956 will have an opportunity of
making better use of their Agri
cultural Conservation Program
I than ever before, according to Mc-
! Adams. With allotments on tobac-'
\ CO, cotton and wheat, and with the j
-'-need to shift p’roliuction from some
of the acreage In thoSe crops, all
farmers have an opportunity to use
the agricultural conservation pro
gram in the seeding of grass ah-d
legumes. In doing this farmers j
will not only be helping to bring
production into balance, but they j
will be building reserves in the
soil for future needs.
ACP assistance for these prac
tices is available to every farmer
in every county and throug'hout
the State, According to McAdams,
however, in order for the oevrall |
benefits ^to be realized by all peo
ple, every fanner must be con
servation minded. Public money is 1
being spent in this vital conserva
tion effort, and the public will
best be served if all farmers par
ticipate, McAdams said.
