Stew- Chapel Hill School Board members and State Deputy Fire Marshal Kern Churcli of Raleigh made a 90-minute fire safety inspection of the North.'^idc and Chapel Hill Elementary Schools yesterday morning. As a result of the trip, Mr. Church told the Board members he w'ould submit a written report to them in time for ther Monday evening meeting The Fire Marshal made the tour with the Board at the latter’d reque.st, as a result of recent quej-t- lions concerning fire safety in the two schools. Above Average Of Type Mr. Church .said that he felt the Chapel Hill Elementary School, as a whole, was in belter than average condition from the standpoint of over-all fire safety, than buildngs of a similar type and age over the state. The local school was built in 1914. However, the Board and Mr. Church together studied a number of potential fire danger areas in this building, including the second floor Mary Bayley Pratt Library, the first and second floor corridors, the auditorium stage area, the window walls between the auditorium and corridors, and the wooden ceilings of the corridors. The concrete and steel fire lowers constructed at the Chapel Hill Elementary School la.st year brought a very great improvement in over-all fire L'jfety at the school, Mr. Church said. Recommen dations which he might make as to additional im provements would be aimed toward guaranteeing safe access to these towers, or to alternate adequate (escape e.xits in the event of a fire. At Northside At the Northside ScIu.m)! --- a one-.slory building the initial unit of which was con.-.ructed 33 years ago — the groiij) .showed parlieuhir auention to several classrooms w'hich open onto the school auditorium, p orly fire-resi.stanl composition ceiling board used in some areas of the building, and to the general insulation qualitie.; of tlie furnace room. In addition, the group scemefl conemned wilh the actual strucrui-al .stability of the wesi wall of the old part of the Norlh.slde School. It was brought out that the expected comple tion late this year of the new eight-classroom ■wing at Northside would relieve from use at that time the substandard classrooms bordering the auditorium in the original section of the School. Mr. Church .said that he did not feel that either of the buildings needed lo be condemned. But. he said he would have some recommendations to make a> to fii-e safety improvements which would give greater assurance that children would have time for safe ('vacuatirn of the building in the event of a fire. iiL«&oii pieaaeu not lite Cluef J.
