Chapel Hill, N. C. J. Q. LeGrand, Attorney Jan. 1, 8. 11, 22, 29 Feb. 5 applying fertilizers to permanent pastures and alfalfa. Livestock farmers in this part of the county must have an abundance of good quality pastures to compete with other sections. A liberal fertilization once a year is necessary to main tain good Ladino clover grass pas tures. If a soil test has not been made, a safe recommendation would be to use from 400 to 700 pounds of either 0-10-20 or 0-14-14 fertilizer per acre. Alfalfa simply will not pro duce unless given an ample annual application of fertilizer high in phos phate and potash. From 800 to 1000 pounds of 0-10-20 or 0-9-27 fertilizer with borax per acre is recom- rr ended. The seeding costs of both perman ent pastures and alfalfa are high, and it is foolish to seed these crops v/ay to do this is by applying fer tilizer annually. Don’t neglect this, important practice. FEEDER PIG SALES The Farmer’s Exchange Livestock Market, in order to promote the production of large quantities of quality feeder pigs, is advertising a feeder pig sale for Thursday, Febru ary 5th. They are advertising this sale in the Eastern part of the noon. RECORD BOOKS AVAILABLE Every farmer should keep an ac curate record of farm sales and ex penses. In order to do this a farm record book is of great value. We have a supply of these books at our office and would be glad to provide a copy to anyone free of charge. We also have a supply of “1959 F'armers’ Tax Guide” for distribu tion) - ' ■ an excellent job for much less cost than would foe required in building a new one. Families considering this question could learn a lot from visiting the Tillmans’ and talking over their remodeling experiences. ACP SIGN UP ENDS JAN. 30 lAll farmers wishing to receive early approval of conservation prac tices offered through the ACP pro gram should make application at the ASC Office by January 30th. Some of these practices are liming of crop land, seeding of permanent pastures, building of farm ponds, and improving forests. calendar OF EVENTS LESPEDEZA PROBLEMS On certain farms Lespedeza has failed to make a good crop in re cent years. The Experiment Station has been working on reasons why Lespedeza is not as trustworthy as it has been in the past. They have found two usual reasons for failure. (1) In nematode infested fields Ko rean Lespedeza has been seriously reduced in yield. (2) The Tar Spot disease has proven even more dam aging to both Korean and Rowan varieties. A new variety called Climax is more resistant to the Tar Spot diseaseth an either of the two oth er varieties. In a recent test in Randolph Coun ty the Korean Lespedeza made 1502 pounds, the Rowan 1811 pounds, and the Climax variety 2610 pounds of hay per aCre. It is recommended that where farmers are having trou ble growing Lespedeza, they should try a small quantity of the Climax variety to see if this will improve their yield.
