TIIEY MET LAST NIQHT AND TRANSACTED Business of Much Importance- to The -City Proceedings of The JMeetingr. The city commissioners met last night, Mayor Forbis in the chair. The following were present : Price, Dodson, King, Sergeant, J. W. Scott, Thomas, H. L. Scott, Houston, Mendenhall, Douglas, Love, Hodgin, Iwis and Beall. The registrar and poll holders ap pointed to hold election on extension Monday, filed their returns with the Mayor, the Mayor submitted a report stating that the vote on extension had carried by a large majority, and the following resolution was proposed and adopted. Be it resolved, by the Board of Al dermen of the city of Greensboro, That Whereas, The returns from the re cent election held on the extension of the city limits, just filed with the Board, show a large majority of the vote cast to be for extension, both from the city and from the ptoposed limits, now therefore, Be it Resolved, That the city limits are extended as provided in act of Gener al Assembly, ratified March 7th, 1991. The new members of the Board, J. R. Mendcnhall, R. M. Douglas, Win. Love, J. A. Hodgin, John LewL, W. P. Beall, came forward and the Mayor administered the oath of office. Mr. J. A. Odell appeared before the Board and asked to be allowed to make addition to the frame warehouse in the rear of' Odcll Hardware Co's. property, extending it so as to front on Davie street Mr. H. B. Tatum asked to be allow ed to make an extension to his livery stable in the rear of Balsley lot on South Elm street Mr. J. M. Dick appeared and asked to be allowed to build a frame building to cover his machinery in fear of steam laundry. 1 The Board refused to relax the or dinance requiring buildings erected within the fire limits to be constructed of metal or brick. Mr. D. W, Carl appeared and filed statement by two members of the local Board of underwriters stating that the erection of a new blacksmith shop, tip- on me site or tne one now occupied di Mr. Carl, according to the plans pro posed by him, would not .increase the rate of insurance on the surrounding property 1 - ir.--f ' Mr. Price moved that Mr. Carl be allowed to build the new shojj, jaotj to extend roore:thaii iPWP fi&lind the foundations of the old one. Upon the adoption of tbiVrfsolotlon the ayes and nays were called Tor and the Vote resulted as follows t ; Ayes, Dodson, Sergeant, J.: W. Scott, Thorn id, H. Lr Scott, MendcnhaDi' Love, Hodgin, Lewis, Beall and King. Nays, Price and Houston. - t Mr. Houston moved that the chair man of the street committee be in structed to accept the offer of Mr. Armfield of the road machine and hire horses, to use the machine for levelling the streets. Carried. Mr. C, D. Benbow chief of fte fire department submitted his report for the vear, setting forth the Vork of that department. The resignation of Alderman King was indefinitely postponed. Mr. Kin offered the following res olution! Resolved. That the Mavor annoint five Aldermen as a special committee to purchase a crushing outfit and good, sufficient roller, also power is hereby given said committee to make contract for a supply of stone for crushing pur posesi .The expense 0 f the outfit and contract to be paid out of the bond fund. Carried. Messrs. King, Douglas, H. L. Scott Mendenhall and Price were appointed as that committee. Mr. King moved that a commute of one from each ward be appointed to consider the laying off of the wards of the city and the representation therein and make a report to an adjourned mecungon Friday night next Mr. Douglas offered the following ordinance as a substitute for Mr. King's motion: Be it ordained, That the wards of the city remain as now constituted, with the same representation, except that the jth and 6th wards be divided by the center of Arlington street and its extension. j ; ? , The ayes and naes were called for on the vote the substitute. The. vote was as follows: Ayes, I. W, -eeoi Mendenhall, Douglas, Love, Hodgin, Lewis, BeatL Nays, Price, Dodson, King, Sergeant, Thomas, H. L. Scott and Houston. There being a tie Vote, the Mayor voted no. . , , Mr. King's motion was then carried. The following .was the committee appointed: Beall, Love, Brown, Ser geant, Thomas and Xing. Mr. Love moved that the registra tion heretofore taken for extension be operative for the coming municipal election and that advertisement for those wholiave not registered to come and register and that a new registra tion tor those who have registered be not necessary. Carried. .' The Mayor , announced that Mr. Keogh had withdrawn his appeal for damages allowed for' the opening of Kbg and Pearson streets through; his property and stated that he had 0 ued t warrant to, Mr, KeogV'fapner hun dred dollars, the amount' rfceortimnd ed by the 'committee,,, and; exhibited and filed the receipt of Mr. Keogh for ''MrTH.'L.' 8torra moved that the and the R. ft D.
