centennial Exposition at Hampton

stories to the effect that Robert Keith
Dargan, who. committed suicide here
on July 11th last, shortly after the;
disastrous failure of i several large
corporations of . which he was manager
the grave was opened and the remains
identified by 50l or more well-known
cictizens who knew him in life. Dar-
gan bad $40,000 insurance on his life, J
$15i000 in the Equitable.: The latter
company accepted the proofs o death
submitted 'and, some months ago, paid
the amount, due, but. the Philadelphia
company, by reason of the current ru
mors that Dargan was not dead, per
sisted in the demand that the body be
disinterred and made an effort some
weeks asro to secure an order from

The Judge declined to issue the order,
but stated tha t, if ..the company were
sued, it could renew its-repuest with
out prejudice from' his decision.

Distillery Was Notorious. ;

session of the-Federal Court was held
Saturday in the trial of the G. W.
Samuels case, alleging fraud while the
defendant was serving as deputy, col
lector. The morning session was con
sumed in receiving the testimony of
three of four government witnesses in
regard to the operation of an illicit
steam distellery belonging to a man
named McEwen, ' six miles from
Wilkesboro. One witness testified that

a preacher, by the name . of Perdew,
denounced the distillery in a sermon
in Wilkesboro, that the district at
torney made" a vigerous effort to show
that itwas jao.torious,. and.yet itwas
permitted by the revenue officers to

road, during September, October and

porting at the ;time that they had de
