Always in Advance. THURSDAY," NOV. 15. 1906. NOTES AND COMMENTS. That the commerical interests v of Polk county would like to in crease their volume of business we are not bold enough to ques tion, but how they can do this is a" question that engages their at tention more or less all the time. They welcome new people to the county, and this is commendable but do they perform their part to help keep them here? This is the query with the big question mark. What are you doing in the matter of extending the help ing hand to new people and mak ing them feel at home? Patronizing home industry is one way in which the home mer chants can st rengthen themselves wi h the people. Now of course there are some things which can not be procured 'at home" but you can at least make inquiry be fore sending away for anything. It is sometimes claimed that you can buy cheaper by sending -away, for goods or supplies and while this is true in many cases is it not also true that you do not always get what you want and have to return it, and the cost of transportation and other expen ses that you had not counted on make it just as costly in the end. And again, is it good business to send away your cash when by trailing or exchanging accounts you' keep the money at home rather than send it away to part ies who have no common interest in the welfare of your section. Bear this in mind and you, will strengthen, your business. We know of at least one firm in this county which has practiced this and they have built up a large business for themselves by pat 'ronizmg the- 'home folks" whenever possible. During the fine fall weather prevailing just now we ar apt to forget that the bad weather will come a little later and the road over-seers should look after the bad places-in the roads and repair the gully bridges, etc., and be fortified as far as possible against trouble when the unfav orable weather prevails. Popular Mail Carrier Remembered by His Many Friends Upon the Eve of His Sixty-third Birthday. The Tryon,Lynnand Columbus friends of our popular and oblig ing mail carrier, C. E. Page gave him a most liberal pounding last Saturday night on the eve of his sixty-third birthday as a testi monial of their appreciation of the many obliging acts of accom modation which he is continually rendering on Jiis daily trips back and forth between Columbus and Tryon. Ready of wit, friendly with everyone and always on the alert to confer a favor he has endear ed him-self to all who in any way come in contact with him, and he counts his friends as legion. j Mr. Page was never known to have captured a prize at a beauty show, never-the-less he wears a smile that won't come off and carries a good time around with him. Many persons have winced under his homely thrusts when ever they were so unwise as to venture a remark at his expense. The pounding was a complete surprise and when the crowd walked in on him he could hard ly give expression to his pleasure and his gonial countenance beamed with a broad grin. All wished him many happy returns of the day and he thanked the friends for their thoughf ul ness and assured them that "it pays to advertise. " TRYON HAPPENINGS.
