The little eight or ten months old child of Bill Shields of Greens Creek was burned by falling from a chair into the fire while its mother was out of the house, on Friday of last week; The little one was tied by a cloth to hold it in the chair, while the mother went out of the house on an errand and by some means the baby turned the chair over, fall ing into the fire and was not re leasted from the chair till the cloth was burned away from it, then crawling to the door, its cries brought mother to its aid to find the child seriously burned, irom which it died a few hours later. A QUIET WEDDING. Miss Fannie Alcestus Charles becomes the bride of Prof. John T. Gilbert The wedding occured on Sunday last, 24, inst. at the home of the brides parents, the place known as the Houston place- The ceremony was per formed by Rev.W. W. Womack. The bride is an accomplished lady and of rare charm as a soloist and sweet singer. Mr. Gilbert i to ue congratuiatea on winning her heart and hand. The news of this quiet wedding worked its way through the ice clad forest on Monday morning, when "old Josh" unveiled his face and kissed away everything that had the semblance of chillyness or drearyness and bid the happy couple, "look on the bright side of life. The News joins the many friends of both, bride and groom, in wishing them much happiness. THE POLK COUNTY BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. C. Hampton, end of last week. POPLAR GROVE. Little Jessie Whiteside spent last Friday night at Geo. Smith. M ss Mossie Edwards spent Friday night with Miss Victoria Womack. . , . s Little Oliver Walls took tea at Mrs. Powell's one evening last week. J. T. Edwards and family, also your correspondent took supper at Mrs. J. C. Powell last Sunday eve. Rev. Mr. Walls and family now occupy the little new house between the public school house and Mr. Jerry Jackson's. We are glad to have them among us. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Whiteside and little son Broadas spent last Friday at Rev. W. W. Womack's. They reported a pleasant time. A goodly number of the people here gave Mr. and Mrs. Walls a pleasant little call the first night they were in their new home. We gave them a pounding which was estimated at about $5.00. All staid long enough to form acquaintance; Spent the time in pleasant converse, read 1 John 4, sang", hand prayer, bade them good-night and returned home. George Washington's Birthday was celebrated by our school Friday night, Feb. 22, exercises opened at 7 p. m. closed at 9. A nicely arranged program was carried out. We began with early boyhood and closed with death and burial of America's great son. The program was composed of recitations, national songs, dialogues etc. Exercises opened with Song No not One." Teacher and school read if salms 16b was then lead in prayer by Rev. Wall. The pupils acquited themselves very nicely An attentive audience was held uy tne nappy cnnaren ior two hours. LYNN NEWS. There was no services at Chapel last Sunday owing to in clemecey of the weather. Rev. Mr. Croker will preach in Chapel next Sunday Mar. 3rd. at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Mr. Marshall as ye$ is quite indisposed not able to leave his room. Mrs. Norman at this writing is quite indisposed, not able to teach. She hopes to be able to resume her work by Wednesday. Don't forget the place to get Wood's garden seeds at Kannon Keeter & Ko. Mr. and Mrs. Stancel, who was numberdd among the Lynites awhile, sometime back and left us have returned, and will soon be domiciled in one of the new cottages recently built by Hosiery Company. H. L. McDaniel made a short visit to his home in RutherfOrd ton, returning one day last week. F. A. Thompson will soon have a new metal roof on his residence. More of them would be better. We only have ohe more week of school and then a long vaca tion. NO one can tell what our next school will be, we seem to be grouping in the dark along this line. A. P. Davis, a familar figure nmong the Lynn people, is at home again, having been at work in Spartanburg for quite awhile. Oranges, apples, bannas etc., fresh and nice at Kannon Keeter &Ko. J. A. Tryon, Feb. 27 Tue Musical e given in the Baptist church last Thursday night for the benefit of the Tryon Graded School was an unqualified success in every way. A very large audience greeted the musicians and each number .1 on tne program was receiveu with enthusiam and the players had to respond to frequent encdr- es. Miss uiarK scorea a ueciueu hit" with her singing and Dr. St. John and Miss Erwin of Spar tanburg were well received Mr. and Mrs. Doubleday needed no introduction to a Tryon audi ence, as their popularity is well established. Those who assisted the program were: Miss Aileen Clark, Soprano; Dr. 'Frank C. St. John, Spartanburg, Violin; Mr. Harold Doubleday, Flute; Miss Elois Erwin, Spartanburg, Ac companist; Mrs. Harold Double- day, Acccmpanist. A. D. Beatson, Sr., died Mon day morning between ten and twelve o'clock. M r . Beatson was sick only a few days and his death came as a district shock to many of his friends, who were unaware of his serious illness. Pneumonia was the cause of his death. Both of his sons were away, A. D. Beatson, Jr., being in Chicago, and the younger, Whitwell, in Florida. They were telegraphed for but did not reach home before the end came. Mr. Beatson and his family have lived in or near Tryon about twenty years, having come here from Florida and purchased a place in the famous Thermal Belt. Altho' Mr. Beatson was origin ally from Scotland, he had lived in this country and Canada for a great many years and married a New England lady. The deceas ed was sixty-one years of ajre. A wife, two sons and a daughter, all of whom are grown, survive him. Mr. Beatson was a mem ber of the Episcopal church aq the iuneral services were , cc;n- The interment took placed 1 his morning at the Tryon cemeteryv The work of laying the eight incn mains irom Meirose moun tain near Horse Shoe Bend, which the Tryon Electric Light, Water and Power Co., expected to have commenced ere now, but has been delayed, owing to the accident which befell R. B Hingel, who has the contract. Mr. Fngel was accidentally shot in the right hand and forearm several days ago, but is rapidly improving and expects to under take the work within a short time. Justice Dead. The news of the death of Atty. Geo. C. Justice of Rutnerfordton was received here on Friday of last; Mr. Justice was well known to the people of Polk having been a resident of this county for several years, located in our county seat and engage in the practice of law. He was a lawyer of considerable abijity; His death is a premature one, as, he was yet in prime o f life;The News voices the genuine sorrow of the people of Polk, over the sad intelligence of this death, God had, just a few months prior to Mr. Justice's death, blessed the home with a little baby boy! May his presence in the home serve to sweeten the bitter cup of the grief stricken widowed mother.
