Now that the legislature is ovt, and the road law of Polk has been amended would it not be ' a good suggestion to call out a force of hands and mend the roads.' There seems to be little need -for advertising Log Cabin Inn this season; We learn that Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson have let every room of the Inn for the coming season. The bigest fool in the land is the man who succeeds in hiding himself from himself, but shows himself to everybody else. We don't mean you present com pany, you know, is always ex cusable. When the new Automobile road has been completed, which Mr. Stearns is now grading up the mountain, and his famous Autos are in opperation on it; The Inn will maintain its steady increase in popularity as an all-tbe-year-round-resort. If you are superstitious about the number 13 you had better give us your quarter dollars, for on each one are 13 stars, 13 letters in the scroll of the eagles beak, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 arrow heads and 13 letters in the words ' 'quarter dol lar ' Now it's not safe for you to keap them, so just bring 'em in and get credit on your sub sciption for the full amout, for you might have "bad luck." In a letter, recently received from Hon. W. T. Crawford, now of Washington, D. C, he wishes it published in the News for the information of the people of his district, that he will have no seeds for distribution this spring as his predecessor, Hon. J. M. Gudger Jr., still has this branch of service in hand. Mr. Craw ford says he will be in position to render this service to his people next spring, and will take pleas ure in serving them in this, or any thing else in his power. Some one has said : ' 'There is nothing reat in the world but . man, and there is nothing great in man but mind.', But this great" thing in man gets migh ty stormy sometimes, and be comes a real storm centre, from which, often, emihates a passion to take the life of a fellow being, and then this "great thing in man" resumes its greatness and I pleads innocence, acquital from lawful punishment, and liberty to repeat the list murderous deeds which results from a stormy condition of t h i s "great thirigrmman." "Insanity" has become the "cities of refuge for the man slayer," fled for safety to these "cities of refuge," but Church Directory. COLUMBUS, N. C. Baptist Rev. W. W. Jones paster, P. O. CENTRAL INDUSTRIAL INSTITUTE. This educational plant is locat ed in the town of Columbus, Polk county, N. C. an ideal lo cation for a school of its grade A high school, and has all neces sary equipments for conducting a successful educational institu tion. Its name, "CENTRAL; is very appropriate as it relates to the actual educational necesities of its surroundings. The second part of its name- U TL USTRIA L, has hitherto existed only in name. This INSTITUTE, by reason of its favorable conditions for a pre paratory school, should enlist and receive the hearty support, patronage and encouragement of the people of this favored sec tion of our county. We hope to see at least one hundred board ing students domiciled in the nice and comfortable Dormitory apartments of the school next fall, with a competent teaching and managing force in charge. A well equipped educational plant without students is like a saw mill with every appliance for sawing, and a fine Liddell engine, but not a single log on the yard. Begin with the Mar. winds to blow up interest in the school; Talk it up, write it up, work it up. Who'll be the standard bearer? September is the time for opening. Founder, Trustees, parents, citizens and all patrons, it is up to you; What thou doest, do quickly. There is no earthly need for a single boy or girl, who wants an education, and who lives in Polk county, to go elsewhere to school. Mary Dark circles under the eyes indicate a sluggish circula tion, torpid liver and kidneys. Faithful and Efficient Always Present Stood by his Party Voted Consistently and Correctly. Correspondence to the French Broad Hustler Raleigh Mar. 11, 1907. Senator Ballenger took his de parture from the capitol city on last Saturday afternoon, having completed sixty days of arduous labor for his constituency. " He has been a faithful and efficient representative, answering every roll call (except one night ses sion) when the "Clansman held the board" at the Academy of Music, and no senator has voted more consistantly and correctly. The senate accorded to him whatever he desired for the ask ing. Not so with the House and he goes home disappointed in failing to get a bill through that body creating the office of tax collector for Polk county and also one providing for a finance com mittee, similar to the measures enacted for Henderson county four years ago. But he did what he could and no one would have succed with every Republican member of the committee, to which, his bill was refered in the House, always present and most of the Democrats absent, it may appear strange that an as sembly composed of ninety-seven democrats and only twenty-three republicans should decline to pass a bill providing an office for a democrat, but this is just v:wt has happened in a number of in stances during the session of the General Assembly just closing. Even Congressman Hackett was "sat upon" last week in an effort to have a treasurer appointed for his county. Senator Ballen ger appeared before the House cemmittee and nrged the mem bers to report his bill favorably, making the point that it had passed the senate without opposi tion and that the democrats of his county were anxious to get it througrf. Failing in getting a favorable report rendered the fate Of the bill exceedingly doubtful on the floor and no minority report was offered and the fight had to be abandoned Mr. Ballenger stood by the dem ocrats of old Henderson and noth ing affecting them passed the senate. He had "an eagle, eye out" all the time and propositions .hat were objectionable were either amended to his liking or hit the table "ker-thump." MILL SPRING NEWS. J. R. Only a few o f the relatives and friends of the couple were pre sent, but there was an expression of genuine delight, when the two lives were blended, and two glad hearts now throb in unison with all joyous anticipations of happy matrimony. Brighter ncreaseoiir Prospects Yields Per Acre We hare ef many actual photographs of cotton fields on which no fertilizers were used and pictures of ilelds oq whica "other makes' of fertilisers were used. Results of these crops were dismal failures There are much "brighter prospects" ahead for tne progressive farmers of the South. Two and three bales to the acre are only ordinary yields where Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers are used with proper cultivation. Make your cotton mature early, and thus escape the boll weevilsand other damaging insects. You can easily do this, as well as increase the number of bolls (and their size) on your plants by plentifully using Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers. This method will tremendously "increase your yields per acre." Don't be fooled into buy ing a substitute. Virginia-Carolina Chemical Co. Richmond. Va, ixortoiJc. va. Durham, N. C. Charleston, 8. C.
