AUG 20 1908 With great sorrow have we learned, of the death of Editor John Mafness, of the Ch drryvihe Eagle. Mr. Magness was a bright ener getic man in the morning of life and this sad intelligence will come as a shock to his many friends of this and Rutherford counties, where he was well known; being at one time connected with the Rutherfordton Sun. With the death of Judge Fred erick Moore, of Aiheville, the state loses one of her most dis tinguished jurist. Judge Moore hadtfcen on the bench for six years and was recognized by all as a judge whose record was un impeachable. tri- note tne im provements that are now being made on the court house. We hope attention will soon be paid to our court yard which is great ly needed We note with pleasure W. C. Dowd.of Charlotte, will be a can didate for speaker of the House. A better and more conservative man can not be found in the Old North gtate and we think the members of the house realize this from his past record. Do not forget on Sept 1st, the -CentraUndustrial Institute opens her doors under good and efficient instructors. Send your boy or girl here where he can secure the best results at a minimum cost. These young ladies put up a strong fight for the first prize and had the contest lasted a few weeks longer it is rather doubtful whether Miss Margret String field, of Waynsville, could have rode off in the automobile. The whole county ws interest ed in this contest and watched eagerlj the gains from day to day of her two fairest and most pop ular young daughters Miss Sallie Hart, of Saluda, captured the $500 piano with 261.298 votes while Miss Emma McFarland, of Tryon, won the . $36 gold watch with 37,795 vote: .
