ABRAHAM LINCOLN Tomorrow, Feb, 12th. being Abraham Lincoln's Birthday, the whole United States will pay tri bute Lo the birthday of one of America's greatest presidents and statesmen. That his birth should be a national holiday is but rip;ht and just; his lite should be held up as an ideal to every child for it is an inspiration to both rich and peor alike to do noble deech and accomplish great things in life. Born in obscurity, fettered down by poverty, he over came these impediments and - went from a log cabin hut to the White House the highest honor in the world. This in short is the life of Lincoln. The story of his life is not confined to the Harrow limits of the United States,, for children of all climes read in their elementary books of this great and good man. That is untimely death was a hard blow to the south during the reconstruction days is well remembered by those who lived during that period, for had he lived! II the torn and bleeding south, still proud even m defeat, would never have suffered the humilia tion which followed. That Lin coln was a friend to the South very Southerner believes and the South joins in most sincerely in this commemoration of the birth of "Honest Abe. " Constaot-McCunT Wedding. That love laughs at lecksmiths was clearly demonstrated last Thursday night, when Mr. Virgil McCurry and Miss Montie Con stant hied themselves away to- the Palmetto State and were joined together as man and wife. "Mrs. McCurry was the charm ing daughter of Mr. a C. Con stant of Columbus, and has many friends throughout the county who ;wishe for her a long and happy life. It is an every clay occurrence io get notice at this , office to addresses of our paper change from one postoffice to another, which is easily done when the patrons give their old addresses, which yrr. hope they wiK uo hex e- after when as king to change. I received a letter on Jan. 20th telling me of the illness of my mother, and on-Thursday morn ing, bright and early, I started on the journey alone, and reach ed my destination, St. Peters burg, Saturday night at 9:15,anty found my mother much improv ed. - - Next morning I looked out on abeatiful rose garden in full bloom. The orange and grape f)rui t hrees are laden with beau tiful vfellow fruit and o-eraniums are growing in the open yard. The Central Hotel, where I am stopping, near Tampa Bay, a person can walk out on the porch and see the ships as they come into and leave ths harbor from Cuba, Tampa and other ports. My brother to 3k me out for s i ide in his boat on th bay and was surprised at the number of fish that could be seen in large schools darting about in the wat er. The greatest enemy of thes beautiful fish, fishermen excep ted, is the Pel Mean, a large bir with a long bill which dives about n the water feasting on fish. In jpite of-these dreaded enemies the fish seem to prosper and the1 jnfortunate ones that are caught ire not missed. I saw several fishermen coming in with loaded boats of fish, some of the fish be ing, three feet K in length and ye:gh from 50 to 10Q poundsi Thesi fish are packed in ice and slipped to the inland cities and .owns. Vegetables are green nnd the1 tables are laden with all the good products of the garden which we in North Carolina, have only in the summer. Guests -are here from all parts of United States and instead of be ing clad in overcoats and furs, everybody is dressed in white and carrying umbrellas. Many of th inhabitants here have: never seen the mountains,., of which we of North Carolina are so proud. The climate here is not too hot to be uncomfortable for a good breeze -is to be had at any time. I can't tell all I have seen in this short letter, but will write another letter soon- The Thome family wishes to be remembered to all the readers of The Polk County News. - Piespectfuljy 3 -Mrs. J.
