Non-Union Men and Police Attacked, Beaten and Shot Steamer Fired On Women Join in Warfare. Pittsburg, Pa. Strike riots, second only to those of bloody Homestead, occurred at the plants of the Pressed Steel Car Company, at McKee's Rocks, a few miles below Pittsburg, on the Ohio River. Five thousand bitter strikers made a stand against the company bringing in box carB filled with strikers. At least a hundred persons were injured in pistol fights, by stones or clubs, and at midnight 1000 strikers were grouped about the works, each with a missile or a gun. Eight persons were so seriously in jured in the clashes that they could not be hurried away by their friends. Three of these were taken to the Ohio Valley Hospital. None of them speaks English. The others seriously injured are John Farrell, chief of police, shot through the fleshy part of his arm and stabbed twelve times; Benkla Malua, a striker, shot through body, will probably die;- Sophia Mezxo, wife of a strike breaker, hit with a brick while trying to get her husband out of the mob, serious; Harry Fouchs, a striker, shot through the arm, bone broken.. in addition to these it is estimated that almost a hundred others were hurt, but all were hurried av,ay by friends under cover. At least seven women were car ried away by friends, but no trace of them can be found. They were foreigners who had taken part in the riot. Their friends fear the law and refused to admit that they were in jured. Dr. Davidson, of the Ohio Valley Hospital, says that he dressed the wounds of nineteen seriously injured persons whose names he did not get, all of whom declined to remain in the hospital. In addition to these scores were attended to by other phy sicians in the hospital while phy sicians in the town have been busy binding up wounds. In addition to a battle at noon and one at 6 p. m., in each of which about fifty people were injured, there was a battle on the Ohio River The steamer Steel Queen, owned by the Pressed Steel Car Company, trying to land somo strike breakers in the mills by way of the water gates leading from the Ohio River, was fired on by 300 strikers con cealed on the river bank. The strike breakers and that boat crew Avere well armed and returned the fire twofold. More than 100 shots were ex changed before the Steel Queen turned and ran for the further shore of the Ohio River, where the men were disembarked. It is not known how many on the boat were injured, as the place where they were landed is isolated and all soon disappeared. SUFFRAGETTES REFUSE TO EAT. We must develop a new agricul tural conscience in this country. We must come to the time when a man will be as much ashamed of a gall ed, gullied, unkempt field as of a dirty, ragged, ill-smelling coat; as much ashamed of a thin, starved, mistreated hillside as of a thin, starv ed, mistreated horse, and when he vill take as much pleasure in re storing a worn-out field to life and comeliness, making the waste places glad, ashe would in feeding a half starved brute itself mistreated by some brute in human form. The Al mighty has given the land as a her itage for all generations, and we must repeat that the man who abuses and wastes this heritage (in which the Lord gives him only a life interest after all) is just as culpable, just as guilty, as a guardian who misuses the heritage of orphaned and defense less children entrusted to his care. Well did Lanier feel and express the deeper meaning of our sinful land waste in the South when he wrote: "Upon that generous rounding side With gullies scarified Where keen Neglect his lash hath plied Yon old deserted Georgian hill Bares to the sun his piteous aged crest And seamy breast By restless-hearted children left to lie Untended there beneath the heedless . . sky, As barbarous folk expose their old to die." If the weighing (machines that stand around in publkJ places with mouth ever open for cents could talk odd tales could they tell of the many and varied people that step upon their platforms of the stout lady who steps down with a smile glad that she has lost one pound out of 300, of the stoat gentleman who fumes because he has gained one, of the sMm gentleman who steps up with a forty pound suit case in his hand and is astounded to find himself gaining weight so rapidly, of the merry parties of young men and young women who, some plump, some lean, step up one after another: of the proud parent who sets little Willie there and then little Ethel, of tfhe keen small boy who tries to get his grandfather to let him step up before the old gentleman steps down so that they oan both get weighed for a cent, and all that sort of thing. In short the weigh img (machine meets all sorts and varieties of peo ple, and it comes to know them all, or nearly all; and It knows as a rule just what prompts them to weigh themselves, whether it is idleness, in terest, curiosity, fear or just fun. But probah-ly it would puzzle even a weigh ing rrachdne. though it knows so many people, to tell just why a woman waA insr along a street on a rainy nisht and carrying an umbrella should halt at a machine standing out on the sidewalk and step up in the rain to weigh herself. To decide the all important ques tion of coffee, whether or not it is really the hidden cause of physical ails and approaching fixed disease, one should make a test of 10 days by leaving off coffee entirely and using well-made Postum. I had not used it two weeks in place of coffee until I began to feel like a different person. The headaches and nervousness disap peared, and whereas I used to be sick two or three days out of a Week while drinking coffee I am now well and strong and sturdy seven days a week, thanks to Postum. "I had been using Postum three months and had never been sick a day when I thought I would experi ment and see if it really was coffee that caused the trouble, so I began to drink coffee again, and inside of a week I nad a sick spell. I was so 111 I was soon convinced that coffee was the cause of all my misery, and I went back to Postum, with the result that I was soon well and strong again and determined to stick to Postum and leave coffee alone in the future."
