FOR THE YEAR 1909, SHOWING THE EXPENDITURES FOR THE COUNTY OF POLK, NORTH CAROLINA- DECEMBER As has beea customary, The Polk CountyJrvvs 0it take a week off Christmas and no paper will be issued next week. For fifty one weeks in the year the old press is pulled and for fifty one weeks in the year The Polk County News goes t over five hundred homes telling the readers of the news and doings of their friends. In taking one issue from our readers in order that The Polk County News force may enjoy themselves, we believe and trust that our readers think it a merited vacation and will wish for us a happy Christ mas. To them we wish the Christ mas of 1909 the happiest that they have ever spent and trust that the year of 1910 will be by far the most prosperous. To all we heartly extend a merry Christmas and happy Nt v Year! Finance Committee In Sessicn. . The Board of Finance, con sisting of Messrs, J. P. Arledge, W. B. Feagans and J. M. Mitch ell, are now in session and hard at work on the books of the county. The Legislature made no mistake in making the appoint ment, for these men will do their work fearlessly and conscientiously. US. J.. I FOSTER DEAD. Wednesday morning ca. J. R. Foster, wife of Coiint: Miperin tendent, died at her honi at Mill Spring of a complicated disease, the immediate cause of her death seems to be in dispute among the physicians who attended her dur ing her illness. Mrs. Foster was about 45 years of age and was a consistent member of the Baptist church She leaves a husband and three children and two sisters to mourn their loss. The funeral services were held at the Mill Spring Baptist church conducted y the Rev. W. W. .Wommack. The many friends of the bereaved relatives joins The News in expressing their heart-felt sympathy to them in this dark hour of sorrow. The lack of space in this week forbids us from giving a more detailed account of her death. CCi'Dirtus EigQ School to Enjoy Christmas. The Columbus High School closes Friday afternoon for Christmas and will not open again until Monday, January 3rd, 1910. The teachers and students both deserve this vacation and we hope they will have a good time and that old Santa will not over look and fail to reward their efforts in the school room this year. COLUMBUS COMMENTS, Tryon Supply Company Ready For Baas- Anyone visiting the Tryon Supply Company's store at this season would think that he had indeed fallen into that enchant ed Fairyland where old Santa is king. The show windows are beautifully decorated with Christ- mas goods that appeal to botrnMelvin Hill, were in town this old and young and puts the feeling all over a fellow that Christmas will soon be here. Mr. Gash and his clerks are to congratulated for their excellent display of goods and we believe the public will continue to rush to this headquarters and supply their wants for we know they will be welcome and will :feave well pleased with their purchases. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Cannon, of Lynn, were pleasant Colum bus visitors last Sunday. Rev. B.f. Jackson, of Tryon Route 1, was in town lat Sat urday. Massrs. Thos. F. Mills and J. R, Blanton, of Arlington, S C, were business visitors here last week. Mr. V. B. Feagans, one of Greens Creek's prominent citizens was in town this week. Prof. H. L. Koontz, of the Columbus High School, was in Asheville this week. Editor Chs. H. Williams will leave Friday for Shelby, N.C., for a weeks visit Messrs. T. P. Jovington and D.D. S.f Friday the seventeenth, is North Carolina day and the school throughout the State are supposed to observe this day with fitting excises. Colum bus High School will have an elaborate progamme for that day and the friends and patrons of the school are cordially invit ed. Beside the usual pro gramme for such accossions, J. E. Shipman, Eq., wiil deliver '"tod Address in commemoration of the Zeb Vance- Mr. Shipman is an excellent public speaker and those who attend will cer tainly hear something well worth their time and attention- week on buisiness Mr. Walter JacKSon, of the Colunitfus High School, soent r -1 A last Saturday and Sunday in Spartanburg with relatives. Mr. J. A. Cantrell, of Spart anburg, is visiting relatives here this week. The pension checks arrived Monday. This will no doubt be glad news to the old veterans for it may add much to their pleasure during the Chritmas Holidays. Drs. Grady andEngle, of Try on, operated on Master Bostic Page Wednesday, cutting out his tonsil. We are glad to note the operation was successful.
