McKAY'S LETTER. Rutherfordton, N. C, March 20th, 1911. Editor "News:" f The attention of the members of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Interurban Rail- way Company has been called to the "News" i3sueof 'Viarch 16th, contaming.in article by an un disclosed contributor, and your unfriendly comment on the pro posed effort to secure for your town and county a railroad, and, the writer has been instructed to lay before the people, through themtd um of your paper, the attitude of tha above named rail road company. ;' ? We snpk no cnnrrnvArRv ovr . j - this matter, with either your con tributor or any one else, nor is the company greatly ! interested in the projection- of the line, or pushing any effort to induce the Polk County people to , interest themselves in the railway project at all; indeed for months the board have steadily refused to proceed in any way concerning this or any other branch lines, and it was'Qriiy after the redeipt of a great1 number of letters, many interviews with Polk Co inty citizens and sustained ef fort had been made by the people of the County that authority was finally given to look into the prop osition. It may also ! be added that this was not done until the financiers had been! especially consulted wiih reference to the, matter and had given their con- sent in writing. The people were given to un derstand and are again advised that the writer, who ! made the recent visit alcngthe line in com pany with Mr. W. A. Harrill and the chief engineer of . the com pany, is neither the projector nor the p omoter of theraii way, bt meie y occupies tli4 positional" an employee, without a plsce on the b ard of directors, without thi authority to either build or vLhho!d a railroad line .through the County, and if your contrib utor had been so fully advised as he pretends as to the gentlemtn constituting the board, it is in conceivable that he would have suggested that they were endeav oring to secure employment for engineeis, or graft for them selves, and in addition would have known that the- writer is neither a so-called engineer nor an engineer of any kind. 1 he gentleman suggests that a practical plan is to ask the people to take stock in the company, cit ing the procedure of the Duke syndicate as an example of prop er promotion. This is precisely what this company is proposing: but instead of asking the people along the line to subscribe and pay for sufficient stock to build one quarter of the line, as the Dukes are doing, all it asks or has suggested is that a fund of four thousand dollars be raised, the company to take care of the balance. .11 True, many surveys have been made through Polk County, but with only two exceptions these vtere of positively impossible lines that, would not have paid for running expenses and! were lines that were doomed to failure from the start. The two. exceptions that might have goni through was the one projected by the late Col. Frank Coxe, ; who at that time was in a position to have se cured physical connection with the Southern and other railroads, with proper traffic and exchange business and a. fair arbitrary, the other that of .a railroad then building and since constructed. Both of these Were driven from the County by the unfriendly at titude of the people,; with the re sult that the mileage of railroad in the County is barely Sufficient to say the County has a railroad and this was because of the fact that the route . of the Southern over the mountains occupies the only pass possible for getting their line through. M : Polk County is not an ideal railroad County, it is not even a passable one!1 and barely escapes being an impossible one,, for a line that seeks to connect Ruth erfordton by way of Mill" Spring and Columbus with Tryon. Stand ing alone it , is not a desirable proposition either from the topog raphy of the country,'the cost.of construction, includingjthe heavy expense Jot bridging, or the r I a III 1 1 II IIIIIIMKMilMHIHHI IMMMMMMttt t I t f Ef You Are ! . - - - . - . . If, therefore, the article in your issue referred to and your editor ial comments voice the sentiment of the people jor a majority of them, then it is useless for the company to proceed, and we shall take no further steps in the mat ter, until positively assured that it is not only thedesire of a ma jority of Polk County citizens, in cluding its foremost men, but that the company will have their earnest and hefirty co-operation and support in he effort. The company did not of it3 own initiative open up negotiations ; it was earnestly invited there, the Dressure brought to Dear was strong from people whose position was such .that their appeal could not be decently ignored, and whose earnest! desire that the company lookl into" the matter could not be turned down unheed ed. The plans were therefore explained to some of these before makmcr the trip over the counlry, were approved as practicable and fair, and, then having assured it self of the consent of the finan ciers the trip was ordered for the purpose of making a preliminary report.' .
